Almost every program you install adds entries to the start folder, which will make you start many programs with your Windows over time. This causes a slow start-up time and can even affect system performance. In addition to the integrated MSConfig utility, there are free programs like WinPatrol, CCleaner that you can use to disable or manage your starters. But none of this will measure Windows boot time.

Measure Windows boot time

BootRacer is a free tool to measure the time your Windows computer needs to boot. The main function of BootRacer is the complete control of Windows boot time. BootRacer automatically tracks the time spent starting, issues a warning when the computer slows down and displays the degree of deceleration. It is a known fact that Windows slows down over time. BootRacer indicates when performance decreases and warns when urgent action is needed. The new version 4.5 brings new features!

At each start, a countdown is displayed, indicating how long you must wait until the computer is ready for use. This isn´t Your usual progress bar – BootRacer´s estimates are based exactly on your previous computer´s start events, so you´ll knows exactly how long you have to wait before you can start working.

It does not count the time you spent entering your password. Everyone´s The password is different and everyone enters their own password. BootRacer does not take into account the time needed to enter the password when logging in, but only the time your computer needs to load itself.

After downloading and installing the free software, start it and click Boot Time Test and restart your computer.

After a reboot, once you reach your desktop, you will see a countdown in the lower left corner, indicating how long you must wait until the boot process is complete and your Windows is operational. As soon as it is ready, you will see a green sign Good – Go. This means that the start-up process is complete and your office is ready for use.

The results window will show you the following details. You will see how long it takes to start your computer, as well as an estimate of the starting speed.

The time is divided and displayed in the following categories :

      1. Pre-Boot: The pre-start time is not measured
      2. Windows Start : Load drivers, start services, until the connection box
      3. Password timeout is displayed: Password entry time is excluded
      4. Desktop: Prepare desktop and start startup programs

Click Advanced to show you some additional settings and options.

BootRacer also stores your history so you know how your boot time has improved or deteriorated over time.

A click on the Speed up-Button starts your browser and takes you to the SpeedUpMyPC-website – a shareware link.

The tool is good for measuring Windows boot time, but it doesn’t tell you much more. For example, I would have liked to see the individual items and how long each entry took(2)(2)
