Why does BitLocker need a TPM?
BitLocker usually requires a reliable platform module or TPM on your computer’s motherboard. This chip generates and stores the current encryption codes. It can automatically unlock the drive from your PC when it starts, so you can simply connect by entering your Windows login password. It’s simple, but the TPM does the hard work under the hood.
When a person manipulates the PC or removes the drive from the computer and tries to decrypt it, they cannot access it without the key stored in the TPM. The TPM will also not work if it is moved to the motherboard of another PC.
You can buy a TPM chip and add it to some motherboards, but if your motherboard (or laptop) does not support it, you should use BitLocker without TPM. It’s less safe, but better than nothing.

Allow BitLocker without compatible TPM in the local group policy editor
If you allow BitLocker without TPM, you must unlock the drive from the operating system at boot time with a password or boot key on a USB stick.
Step 1: Open the local group policy editor.
- Press Windows Logo + R to open the Run dialog box, type gpedit.msc, then press Enter.
Step 2: In the left pane of the Local Group Policy Editor, go to the strategic path below:
- Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administration Templates > Windows Components > BitLocker Drive Encryption > Operating System Drives
Step 3: In the right pane of the operating system drives, double-click on Additional Authentication Required at Startup to configure them.
Step 4: Then select the Enabled option button and make sure the Enable BitLocker without compatible TPM check box is selected. Then click on OK.
Then you can activate BitLocker.
