Microsoft Outlook is an excellent email client. It has several features that you cannot receive in other email programs. It can easily manage multiple email accounts. But sometimes serious problems can occur when using the Microsoft Outlook client. In general, the problem occurs when you send or receive an e-mail message. Outlook cannot connect to your incoming mail server (POP3). If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

This behaviour can occur if one of the following conditions is met:

  1. There are corrupted files on your hard drive.

Enable POP in email settings

Outlook uses POP and IMAP to send and receive emails. If you have not enabled POP in your email service provider, this problem may occur. Also check this setting. For Gmail, you can click on the Equipment Settings button and select Settings. Then go to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP page and make sure that the POP download settings are set to Enabled.

Uninstalling/removing the antivirus program

If disabling the antivirus program does not help you, you can try uninstalling or removing the antivirus program from your system. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and delete the antivirus program you are using. If the problem is solved, it means that the antivirus program you are using is no longer up to date. You should download the updated version.

Run Outlook in safe mode

Outlook has its own safe mode that starts the software without add-ins and additional customization files. Open Outlook in safe mode if there is a problem with the application. To open Outlook in safe mode, press the Win + R shortcut key and type “Outlook /safe” in the Run text box. Outlook opens in safe mode when you click OK.

Make sure that the Windows Update Service is enabled.

Another thing you should check is that Windows Update is enabled. To check the configuration of Windows Update, type “Service” in the Cortana search field.

One of the above methods should correct the 0x80042108 error, depending on what caused it first. However, the probability of the error remaining persistent is low. Restoring the system is the other way to restore your computer at a time when Outlook was running smoothly. A complete reinstallation of the Windows operating system is only necessary in very rare cases.
