Although you are using Skype, you can check the history of recent conversations from the application at any time; you may need to export your chat and shared file history to keep a recording offline for backup purposes or as proof of a confidential conversation.

1. Go to skype.com and log in with your Microsoft account.
2. Once connected, select what you want to download, for example
   • Conversation
   • Files
3. When you are finished, click on the’Send request’ button visible here.
4. A message immediately appears indicating that “Your export is in preparation”. Come back soon to download it.

Enable Skype data storage on your computer

We need to make sure that Skype stores the data on your PC so that you can back it up. To check if Skype stores local data or not, open Skype and click Tools in the main menu. Click on “Options” in the menu that opens.

In “Options”, click on “Privacy”, then on “Privacy Settings”. You will find here a section’Keep history for’ with a drop-down menu below. Make sure that it is set to “forever” and not to “no history”.

Copy the Main.db file.

1. Open the Run command on your Windows desktop.

2. type %appdata%\skype in the Run dialog box.

3. click on OK.

4. open the file with your Skype Name. Depending on the version of Skype, it may contain other words/characters, but it’s the only one that contains your username.

5. Copy the main.db file (which may not have the.db suffix depending on the version) and move it to a safe place for storage.
