Process and compressed memory is a Windows 10 feature responsible for memory compression (also known as RAM compression and memory compression). This feature mainly uses data compression to reduce the size or number of swap requests to and from auxiliary memory. In short, this function takes up less disk space and less memory. In this case, the system and the compressed storage process use 100% of disk and memory, which slows down the affected PC.
The system and compressed memory are responsible for compressing files and folders and managing memory. Under normal conditions, the system and compressed memory use a small amount of CPU. Under certain circumstances, system and compressed storage processes also cause the problem of using 100 disks in Windows 10.
If you have changed your virtual memory settings, such as changing the size of a swap file from Automatic to a fixed value, the system storage and compression process will use 100% of the hard drive affected.
Set the paging file size for all drives to Automatic
The swap file size for all Windows 10 drives is usually set automatically. This is how it should be. However, it is possible that an external factor, such as an update, will change these settings. Or even you did it by accident.
If the paging file size is not set to automatic, it can lead to memory leaks and, as you suspected, high hard drive usage.
In this case the obvious solution is to reset the paging file size automatically.
If you do not know how to do this, follow these instructions:
- Go to Search, enter the performance and go to configuring the appearance of Windows.
- Go to the Advanced tab and under Virtual Storage click Edit …
- Make sure that the option Automatically manage swap file size is selected for all drives.
Scan for viruses / malware
Some viruses and malicious programs can increase the use of the system hard disk and compressed storage. To solve this problem you just need to follow these steps:
Step 1: Download and install the reliable antivirus software.
Step 2: Run a full antivirus scan of your computer and eliminate all potential threats.
Step 3: Now restart your computer and check your system and compressed storage usage.
Recover damaged system files
- Press the Windows + X keys and click the command line (administrator).
2 Now type the following in cmd and press Enter:
SFC / scannow
sfc / scannow / offbootdir = c: \ / offwindir = c: \ windows (If you failed above, try this)
- Wait until the process described above is complete, then reboot the computer.
- Open cmd again, type the following command and press Enter after each command:
a) Dism / Online / Cleanup-Image / CheckHealth
b) Dism / Online / Cleanup-Image / ScanHealth
c) Dism / Online / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth
- Run the DISM command and wait until it is complete.
- If the above command does not work, try the following:
Dism / Picture: C: \ offline / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth / Source: c: \ test \ mount \ windows
Dism / Online / Cleanup-Image / RestoreHealth / Source: c: \ test \ mount \ windows / LimitAccess
Note. Replace C: \ RepairSource \ Windows location of the recovery source (Windows installation CD or Recovery CD).
- Reboot your computer to save your changes and see if you can solve the problem of using 100% of your system’s disk and compressed storage.
Run the Windows 10 System Maintenance Troubleshooter.
The fix will clear all shortcuts and files that may affect the system and compressed storage.
- Press the [R] key and the [Windows] key simultaneously. Then type or cut and paste msdt.exe -id MaintenanceDiagnostic into the “Run” field without quotes.
- Click on “Advanced”.
- Now make sure that there is a checkmark next to “Apply repair automatically” and click “Run as administrator”. Then click “Next”.
The repair will start and automatically clear the files you want to restore. If he gives you instructions, follow them to solve detected problems.
When you are done, check if the memory compression consumes as much CPU power.
