Sometimes you may see the error “No such file or directory” with different problems. In this article I will mainly talk about the error “No such file or directory” in the safe copying protocol. What causes this SCP bug? How can it be solved in different ways without any help? The answers to all these questions are given below.

First I want to explain what SCP is. As an acronym for Secure Copy Protocol, SCP stands for a protocol for transferring security files between local and remote hosts or between different remote hosts. SCP was developed based on Secure Shell (SSH) protocol and helps to transfer files between different devices. SCP has much in common with the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) except that the former provides security and authentication.

Recently, however, many people have reported that SCP does not encounter such a file or directory error when trying to copy files using a program. Being aware of this, I decided to list some of the most common causes of an SCP error and the appropriate solutions to fix it.

Fixing the issue

  1. Make sure you have specified the correct path to the source and destination when transmitting with ascp. It can be especially difficult to provide information about the path to the remote server because there is no navigation on the command line. You can try to use the GUI to find files in the remote directory, or you can ask the server administrator.

In the GUI you can try to update the current folder (exit and return) to see if any files or subfolders have been removed from the server.

  1. On Unix systems, make sure that you do not try to upload a special file such as a symbolic link or a named channel. You can check the types of files by running ls -l.

An example output for this is the following:

-rw-r – r– 1 aspera 0 12 oct 15:50 notes.txt Notebook.
drwxr-xr-x 4 employees aspera 136 23 November 16:49 Project_Folder
prw-r – r– 1 aspera employee 0 28 sen 16:43 apipe
lrwxr-xr-x 1 Staff aspera 13 November 23 16:49 my_link -> my_fichier

You can specify the file type by the first character of the leftmost column. – points to an ordinary file, and d points to a directory that you can both transfer in the usual way. However, special files such as named channels (p) and symbolic links (l) cannot be transferred and cause these error messages to appear.

Use the right commands

You must use the right command depending on the configuration of the hosts between which you want to transfer files. To do this we are going to list some commands that you can use to transfer files between different host configurations.

How to copy from a local host to a remote host

The local host is the actual computer that you have physical access to. The remote host is the one the user does not have physical access to and is located on a remote server. To transfer files from the local host to the remote one you need to use the following command configurations.
$ scp “the_file” your_username @ the_remote_host: directory / path / to / to /

Here is an example of a copy of a text file named “Alexa.txt”.
$ scp Alexa.txt [email protected]:/some/remote/directory

In the same way, you can copy the entire directory as follows
$ scp -r “the_directory_to_copy” your_username@the_remote_host:the/path/to/the/directory/to/copy/to

An example of copying a directory named “Alexa” is as follows.
$ scp -r foo [email protected]:/some/remote/directory/bar

How to copy from remote host to local host

When copying a file from a remote host to a local host, command configurations are different from the original ones. Here are the corresponding commands for copying files between the remote host and the local host.

Use the following command to copy a file
$ scp your_user_name @ the_remote_host: the_file / your / local / directory

Use the following commands to copy a file named Alexa.txt.
$ scp your_user_name @ the_remote_host: Alexa.txt / your / local / directory
