Installing the Windows Defender update
To solve this problem and successfully download the failed definition update, you must:
- Open the Start menu.
- Click on Settings.

- In the right pane, scroll down to the Version Information section and click Open Windows Defender to launch the Windows Defender Desktop application.
- Navigate to the update in the Windows Defender application.
- Click on Update.
Set Windows Defender to automatic
If your Windows Defender is set to Off or Manual, try setting it to Automatic. To do this, you must do it:
- Click on the Windows button, type Services, then select Services from the list.
- Locate Windows Defender and double-click on it.
- Select the start type and set it to Automatic.
- Click OK to save the changes.
Use the command prompt
Some commands that you can execute from an administrator prompt can help you solve this problem.
Press the Windows key, right-click the result and select Run as administrator. Or press the Windows and X keys on your keyboard simultaneously and select Command prompt (Admin) from the menu.
At the administrator’s command prompt, type the following commands, then press Enter after each command to execute them. Be sure to wait until the message of the first command is finished before writing and executing the second command. Also make sure that you do not make typos with the controls.
“%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe” -RemoveDefinitions -All
“%PROGRAMFILES%\Windows Defender\MPCMDRUN.exe” -SignatureUpdate
After both commands have been executed, you can close the command prompt.
Try to run updates now; you should be able to do so from Windows Update and Windows Defender.
