Microsoft is investigating a problem that affected many users during the installation of the KB4512508 cumulative update for Windows 10 1903.
People whose systems are affected by the problem complain that updates are not installed, and they see the error 0x80073701. The problem concerns both Windows 10 and Windows Server 1903.
At this time, the cause of the problem is unknown, and Microsoft is investigating to determine what it can do to solve the problem.
The installation of updates may fail and you receive the error message “Updates Failed, There were problems installing some updates, but we’ll try again later” or “Error 0x80073701” in the Windows Update dialog or in the update history.
Open the troubleshooter for Windows Update.
Windows Update Troubleshooting is an integrated system tool for troubleshooting Windows Update errors. This can therefore be useful when troubleshooting the 0x800737373701 error.
To open the convenience store, proceed as follows.
- Open the Cortana application by clicking on the Type button here to search.
- Enter the keyword “troubleshoot” in the search box and click on Troubleshoot to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update and press the Run Troubleshooting button to open the next window.
- The convenience store can then propose solutions. You can click on the Apply this correction button to apply a suggested resolution.
- Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
- In the User Account Control dialog box, click Next.
- Type reg add HKLM\COMPONENTS /v StoreCorruptTimeStamp /t REG_SZ /d “0” /f, then press ENTER.
- Enter reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows\CurrentVersion\CheckSUR\, then press ENTER.
- Download CheckSUR, then install it from the Microsoft Download Center.
- Once the file has been successfully downloaded, double-click on the file to install it and run CheckSUR.
We recommend that you restart your computer after running CheckSUR to ensure that all changes take effect. In addition, you should try to reinstall all software updates that could not be installed before. If CheckSUR has detected and corrected the cause of the errors, these updates will now be successfully installed.
Checking logs and removing patches
CBS is the abbreviation for component maintenance. CBS.log is a file that contains component logs when they are installed or uninstalled during the upgrade. If you see failed updates in CBS logs, it is better to uninstall patches that lacked assemblies.
When you open CBS logs, look for the words “ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING” and see if there is a KB update for them. Uninstall it, reinstall it with Windows Update.
If there is no error, we recommend that you execute the command:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
The /ScanHealth option checks if the component memory is damaged. It records this corruption in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS\CBS\CBS\CBS.log file, but no corruption is fixed with this switch. It is useful to know whether there is corruption and, if so, what it is.
Finally, if none of these fixes fix bug 0x8007373701, it is better to wait for Microsoft to release a fix that is expected soon. According to Microsoft, an update KB44979797935 also caused this problem.
