Fixing Event Viewer Error 0x80000000000000

Several users contacted us after checking the event log with the error code 0x80000000000000 after an application crash or BSOD with questions. In most cases, affected users report that the problem appears to be random, with no identifiable triggers. The problem is not exclusive to a particular version of Windows because it occurs under Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

Launch the System File Checker (SFC.exe).

  1. Open a highlighted prompt.
  2. If you are using Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, first run the DISM (Inbox Deployment Image Servicing and Management) tool before launching System File Checker.
  3. Type the following command, then press Enter. It may take several minutes for the command operation to end.
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  4. At the command prompt, type the following command, then press ENTER:

sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted files with a cached copy located in a folder compressed to %WinDir%\System32\dllcache.

Reinstall the redistributable packages in C++.

The most popular solution to this particular problem is to uninstall and reinstall any potential redistributable package in C++ that could be the cause of the problem. This indicates that the problem could very well be caused by a corrupted installation of Visual C+++ Redist.

The effectiveness of this procedure has been confirmed for Windows 7 and Windows 10. Here is a brief guide to uninstall and reinstall all the necessary Visual C++ packages that may be responsible for this particular problem:

  1. Press Windows + R to open a Run dialog box. Then type “appwiz.cpl” in the text box and press Enter to open the Programs and Features utility.
  2. Once on the Programs and Features screen, scroll down the list of installed programs and search for your Microsoft Visual C++ Redist installations. Once you see them, right-click on each part and select Uninstall from the context menu.
  3. Then follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall any Redist packages you have installed.
  4. Once each package is uninstalled, close the Programs and Features window and restart your computer.
  5. When the following boot sequence is complete, install each Visual C++ Redist package from the list below, then restart after each completed installation:
    Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (x86)
    Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable (x64)
    Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable (x86)
    Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable (x64)
    Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable
    Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable
    Note: Older Redist packages have two different versions, depending on the architecture of the computer. Download only the bit version that applies to your operating system architecture.
  6. When the next boot is complete, check to see if the problem is solved.
