Some Windows users report that they see error code 17 when trying to restore their iPad or iPhone or when trying to update their iTunes app to the latest version. This problem occurs when your PC or Mac is unable to communicate with Apple’s software update server.
The main cause of this problem is an outdated version of iTunes. In most cases, damage to the AutoUpdate component contributes to this. If this scenario applies, you can try updating iTunes manually. If that doesn’t work, try reinstalling iTunes manually (desktop version or UWP version).
As confirmed by some affected users, this problem can also be caused by an overly protective firewall blocking outgoing iTunes connections. In this case, the best solution is to remove the firewall and look for a softer solution.
Check your Internet connection
Since error code 17 is related to iTunes not being able to connect to its servers, the first thing to do is to check your internet connection.
Your Internet connection may be slow or unstable, making it difficult for iTunes to connect to Apple’s servers.
To check this, you can try running a speed test. You can use a third-party website like Fast.com, which will effectively measure your Internet download and upload speeds.
If the result turns out to be slow or far from the Internet bandwidth you’d expect from a monthly subscription, you can try restarting the router. To do this, locate the router’s power cord, which is usually in the back, remove it and wait at least 5-10 seconds before reconnecting it.
After that, wait for the router to fully boot up. Perform another speed test to see if resetting the router fixed your Internet connection problem.
If your Internet connection works fine after resetting the router, you can try checking the status of the Apple servers to see if the system is currently unavailable.
However, if you’re still having trouble connecting, it’s best to contact your internet service provider and let them know about the problem you’re having with their internet service.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes
In my experience in life, Apple makes its users update their product software from time to time every year because sometimes many features don’t work properly. A similar case presents itself to you in the form of an old iTunes firmware.
You should check the current version of iTunes or update it to the latest version and then try again. It is not possible to update, uninstall, and then install the latest downloaded iTunes.
Otherwise, iTunes cannot download and install the latest iOS version or update/restore the latest version of your iPhone, iPad Pro, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and iPod Touch earlier.
Check the hosts file

You may need to temporarily disable your computer’s firewall, strong security software, proxy, VPN, or anti-virus software. Many of these apps and services block access to external servers and services, which can lead to problems controlling iOS through iTunes.
Disabling the firewall and antivirus apps can vary greatly depending on the software you have installed or are using. Thus, there is no obvious way to give general instructions. However, if you are using any of the above services, temporarily disable them when trying to update / restore your iOS device. You can reactivate these services after they have been successfully executed.
If you are still experiencing error 17 or similar problems, try using another computer on a different external network to see if it works. It may be annoying, but it may indicate that a host change, firewall, or other blockage has not been properly resolved. This is especially useful when trying to restore/update your iPhone when you’re on a strict corporate network. Instead of asking your system administrator to change the firewall restrictions, it’s probably best to just end the process when you get home to your normal network.
