If Outlook is having trouble opening or if there are items missing in your inbox, you can use these steps to solve problems with your data files.
Under Windows 10, whether you are using Outlook 2019, 2016 or an earlier version, the application saves a copy of your email, contacts and calendar in two different data files, depending on the type of offline access account.
If you use an IMAP or POP account, such as the one provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP), your account information is stored in an Outlook data file (PST). However, if you use an Office 365, Exchange or Outlook.com account, the data is stored in the offline Outlook data file (OST).
Changing a registry value
From the beginning, go to the “Start menu” and enter “regedit” in the search field.
Then press “Enter” to open the registry editor. In the Account Control dialog box, choose Yes.
Then, in the registry editor window, you should find the following keys in order:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current version\Explore\User Shell folder
After selecting the “User Shell Folders” button, go to the right area. You can find the value “Cache”.
Disable simplified account creation.
If you try to add your account using the Connect Outlook to Office 365 wizard in Outlook 2016, this may cause the problem. The process of creating an account using the Connect Outlook to Office 365 wizard is called simplified account creation. If you disable this simplified account creation, it is replaced by the Regular Account Creation Wizard, which can solve the problem. We can easily disable simplified account creation using the registry editor. To do this, proceed as follows
- Hold down the Windows key and press R
- Enter regedit and press Enter.
- Use the navigation area on the left to navigate to the next path:
- Locate and click on Configuration in the left pane.
5. right-click on an empty space in the right pane, select New, then select the DWORD value (32 bits).
Create a consistent and up-to-date backup of Outlook data.
Because this Outlook is vulnerable to damage, you should create a regular backup of your Outlook data to avoid losing Outlook data. Backups will help you recover damaged PST data effortlessly.
Using profile management
Because the problem is most likely caused by an error in Microsoft Outlook that prevents you from adding an account using the Add Account option, you can try using the other method to add the account. You can successfully add a new email account from the Manage Outlook Profiles window. Therefore, follow these steps to add a new account through the profile management process.
- Open Outlook
- Click on File in the upper left corner.
- Click on Account Settings. A new drop-down menu should appear.
- Choose Maintain Profiles. Confirm any additional prompts.
- Close Outlook to ensure that Outlook does not block any changes.
