Error 0x80070003 can occur when you try to run Windows Update on a Windows 10 computer. This error usually occurs when Windows updates are not installed during the installation process, or when updates are installed but the process cannot be completed completely.

Error 0x80070003 is a type of Windows file backup and recovery. This error occurs when you copy files or try to backup and restore files and folders using Windows Backup and Restore.
This error prevents you from using the file or folder search. This prevents you from browsing and restoring files on your PC in the File Recovery Wizard.
The complete error message you receive when you try to upgrade to Windows 8.1 should be “SOMETHING HAPPENED AND THE WINDOWS 8.1 couldn’t be INSTALLED”. PLEASE TRY AGAIN. ERROR CODE: 0x80070003.”
To identify the cause of this error, first run a ‘vssadmin list writers’ from a command line (DOS) on the machine after the backup fails.
Create a new account
In many cases, the error 0x80070003 can be a problem for a single user account on Windows. Because one way or another, your user account can be damaged. In this case, you can create a new user account and manage it. Then delete the current account. But don’t forget to back up your personal data. In my case, this method worked. Check your date and time settings.
Make sure that the date and time on your computer are correct.

Rename the Windows Update folder.
Open “My Computer” and navigate to the “C:\Windows” folder.
Locate and right-click on the “SoftwareDistribution” folder and select Rename.
Rename the “SoftwareDistribution” folder to “SoftwareDistributionOLD” and press Enter.
Ask “YES” about the UAC warning and proceed to the next step.
Start the Windows Update Service and try to update your computer.
