Fixing Windows Update Error 0x80070003

Error 0x80070003 is a type of Windows file backup and recovery. This error occurs when you copy files or try to backup and restore files and folders using Windows Backup and Restore.

This error prevents you from using the file or folder search. This prevents you from browsing and restoring files on your PC in the File Recovery Wizard.

The complete error message you receive when you try to upgrade to Windows 8.1 should be “SOMETHING HAPPENED AND THE WINDOWS 8.1 couldn’t be INSTALLED”. PLEASE TRY AGAIN. ERROR CODE: 0x80070003.”

To identify the cause of this error, first run a ‘vssadmin list writers’ from a command line (DOS) on the machine after the backup fails.

Create a new account

In many cases, the error 0x80070003 can be a problem for a single user account on Windows. Because one way or another, your user account can be damaged. In this case, you can create a new user account and manage it. Then delete the current account. But don’t forget to back up your personal data. In my case, this method worked. Check your date and time settings.

a. Click on “Date and time” in the lower right corner.
b. In the window that opens, click Change Date and Time Settings.
c. Press “Change Date and Time” to make sure you have set the correct date/time/year on your computer.
d. When you have finished the date and time, press “Change time zone” to make sure you have the correct time zone.
e. Restart your computer and try to update it. If the problem persists, proceed to the next method.

Perform system check

Click on Start and go to the search box.
Type “cmd” in the search field before pressing Enter.
Enter “sfc/scannow” to start the system analysis.

This approach checks your computer system for any type of problem(s) that could cause the error. You must complete the analysis, as it may take some time. You must restart your computer system to see if error 0x80070003 is fixed.

Rename the Windows Update folder.

Open “My Computer” and navigate to the “C:\Windows” folder.
Locate and right-click on the “SoftwareDistribution” folder and select Rename.
Rename the “SoftwareDistribution” folder to “SoftwareDistributionOLD” and press Enter.
Ask “YES” about the UAC warning and proceed to the next step.
Start the Windows Update Service and try to update your computer.
