How to configure Hotmail on your iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch with POP3

We used to see how to configure Windows Live Hotmail on your iOS devices with ActiveSync. In this post, we will use POP3 to configure Hotmail on an iOS device.

Follow these steps :

Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Add account > Other

Enter a name, Hotmail ID (your Windows Live ID), Hotmail password and a name such as LivePOP3. Click Next to start the analysis. (If you receive an error message indicating that you must be a Windows Live Hotmail Plus subscriber, press OK to ignore the message.

Click Register and your account will be automatically configured. If, for any reason, the server information is not filled automatically, please use the following server settings :

Pop3 server : pop3.live.com (Port : 995)
SMTP server : smtp.live. com (Port : 25)

Incoming SSL Uses : On
Outgoing SSL Uses : On
Authentication : On
Authentication : Delete password
from server : When you remove from your inbox

If all goes well, simply go to the mail application on the home screen and start downloading your pop3 messages. Please note that the first download of messages from POP3 servers may take some time.

Also note that using POP3 :

– There is no synchronization as with ActiveSync. This means that when you use POP3 when you read a message on your iOS device, the message will always be displayed as unread when you access Hotmail on the Internet.

– Only inbox messages can be displayed using this method. All other folders, including user-created content, cannot be displayed.
