Automatically clearing your Google Chrome browser’s cookies when you close or exit Chrome is a good way to maintain control over cookies and other tracking tokens. While you should always manually clear your Chrome cache and history, I recommend that you clear cookies on a regular basis. So, since I forget to do this regularly, I’m going to follow how to configure Google Chrome to delete cookies on both PC and MacOS when you automatically close the browser.

Note that deleting the Chrome history does not delete the Google search history. You can do it, but it’s a different process. The following steps remove all browsing history and website information from your Chrome account.

You’re concerned about security

If someone accesses your Chrome history and profile, or uses a malicious tracking cookie to follow you online, they may obtain information that can be used in harpoon attacks against you, your family and colleagues, or to steal from you directly. And as blocking Chrome’s ads becomes more and more difficult, manually managing your browsing history becomes more and more important.

The less they have to search their browsing history, the less data they have to process. If you’re concerned about this, be aware that your Chrome profile may not be secure, and to improve security, you should also remove autocomplete, site data, and cookies.

Automatically delete your Google Chrome browsing history

Google Chrome does not have a feature to automatically clear your browsing history. However, you can delete cookies when you leave Chrome. To do so, follow the steps below.

  • Go to Settings on the menu. You can use Chrome://Settings/.
  • Click View Advanced Settings.
  • Go to the Privacy section. Under Privacy, click Content Settings.
  • Under Cookies, click Keep local data only until you exit the browser. Then click Done.

The setting above deletes cookies when you close Chrome. However, the browsing history is not deleted.

Using third-party extensions

There are two Chrome extensions that give you additional options for selecting navigation data to be deleted automatically. And it’s interesting to note that both extensions delete data when Chrome starts. Here’s a quick overview of the extensions.

AUTO HISTORY WIPE

Measured by the number of users, this is the most popular option. It works offline and you shouldn’t have any compatibility issues regardless of your operating system.

Automatic history deletion deletes the history when Chrome starts, and you can also select other types of data. You can delete downloads, cache, cookies, website data, saved passwords, and auto-fill data.

Once the extension is enabled, you don’t need to give additional permission to delete browsing data. This is a great option if you share your computer with someone, but there is a drawback. Chrome’s response may take a few seconds, depending on the amount of data to be deleted.

AUTO HISTORY CLEAR

At 13.59 KB, Auto History Clear is slightly smaller than Auto History Wipe, but you probably won’t notice any difference in performance. The extension allows you to select the data to be deleted when Chrome starts up. There is also an option to delete local data at output.

It is important to note that the last history update took place at the end of 2017. On the other hand, History Wipe has been updated with the latest 2015 version. They should still work properly, but if you have any problems, please feel free to send us a comment.
