Google Photos offers you a great service: the automatic backup of your photos and their storage in the cloud. But at what cost? Your privacy. Google can scan your photos, identify your face and track your location. No company should have that much information about you. Learn how to delete your photos from Google.

Why do you Want to Delete Photos from Google?

Users are attracted to Google Photos by its unlimited storage, cross-platform syncing, and sharing capabilities. Some may also appreciate the photo recognition AI, which identifies faces and objects in users’ photos and generates searchable keywords.

However, the data capture capabilities of Google Photos have grown considerably since its launch in 2015. These same features can give Google detailed and uncomfortable glimpses into your life:

  • Identify your friends in your photos and infer family relationships – whether they’re tagged or not.
  • Create a profile of your favorite activities from the photos you upload.
  • Use landmarks to locate your photos – even if you’ve turned off your camera’s location settings.

For some, this is a fair compromise. For others, it’s an unacceptable invasion of privacy. If you’re determined to clean up your Google Photos account, see below.

Removing photos from a mobile device

For those of you who are not so bothered by Google sniffing, you should only delete all photos from your device, not Google Photos. This allows you to create space on your phone while keeping all your photos saved on Google Photos safe. There are several ways to do this:

  • Launch Google Photos on your phone and select a photo to delete. Then, tap the icon with the three dots at the top to open the menu. Then simply select “Remove from device” and the photo will be deleted from your phone, but not from Google Photos.
  • Go to Google Photos Settings and select Share Space on Device. This tells you that the photos have been saved in Google Photos, and you can press Delete to remove all the photos from your device.
  • This is the typical remote option. Just open your photo gallery and trash all your photos. You can also delete multiple photos this way.
