Spotify is one of the most popular music services that provides legal access to a huge catalog of music and the ability to play tracks online without having to buy them. The first time you launch Spotify, you’ll see a notification that the app will open automatically when you start your Windows PC. If you’re one of those users who accepted the registration option and don’t know how to prevent Spotify from running at startup, then this article is for you.

There are several ways to prevent Spotify from automatically starting when you start up your Windows 10 computer. We will make them all available.

Disable Spotify Auto Startup

Prevent Spotify from starting when you start your computer by disabling AutoStart.

  • Open “Spotify”.
  • Select “Edit” > “Settings” in Microsoft Windows or Spotify> “Settings” in MacOS.
  • Scroll down and click “Show Advanced Settings”.
  • Scroll down to the Run and Behavior section of the window.

The setting is automatically saved as soon as it is selected. Spotify should no longer start automatically when you start your computer. I should mention that I found a service called “SpotifyWebHelper” that allows you to run Spotify from a website. You can disable the start of SpotifyWebHelper by changing the “Start Spotify over the Internet” setting to “No”.

Disable the Spotify task from Task Manager

If you don’t want to go through the Spotify settings, you can also disable the automatic launch of Spotify through Windows Task Manager. The Task Manager has a built-in Start tab that allows you to control which programs are running on your PC.

  • To start Task Manager, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc or right click on the Windows taskbar and select Task Manager.
  • Click the “Home” tab. If you can’t see it, click “Details” at the bottom of the window.
  • Find the Spotify element in the list. Right-click it and select “Disable”.
  • The automatic start status of Spotify shown here in the “Status” column is now “Disabled”. It will no longer start at startup.

You can disable any other autoload program in the same way. Please note that in this case the programs will not be able to perform their background tasks. For example, if you disable Microsoft OneDrive on the “Home” tab, after login your files will not be automatically synchronized until you start OneDrive manually.

Rename the Spotify App Exe file

Renaming the executable file of the Spotify application (spotify.exe) and the executable file of the Spotify program (SpotifyLauncher.exe) will solve the problem for you. So, follow these steps to rename the Spotify executable file.

  • Go to your desktop, right-click the Spotify shortcut icon, and select Delete.
  • Hold down CTRL, SHIFT, and Esc (CTRL + SHIFT + ESC) at the same time. This will open the Task Manager
  • Click on the “Processes” tab.
  • You should see the process spotify.exe in the list. If you don’t see it, run the Spotify application.
  • Right click on the spotify.exe process and select Open file location.
  • Now close the Spotify application if it is open.
  • In explorer, right-click the file spotify.exe and select Rename. Add another 1 to the name and press Enter. This should now be the file spotify1.exe. Note: you can give it any name you like. The goal is to rename it.
  • Now right-click the file spotifylauncher.exe in explorer and choose “Rename”. Add 1 more to the name and press Enter. Now it should be spotifylauncher1.exe.

This should prevent the Spotify application from running every time it starts. You can right-click the file spotify1.exe and select “Create shortcut”. You can cut/paste or drag it to your desktop to use this shortcut to open the Spotify application.
