Learn how to download Vimeo videos even if they don’t have download buttons. Vimeo is an excellent source of highly productive artistic videos with a much more cinematic character than what you will find on YouTube. However, if you want to store one of these clips on a secure external disk where they cannot be deleted, for example, you need to know how to download Vimeo videos.
And although some videos have their own download buttons (a setting authorized by the Content Creator), not all of them offer them. Fortunately for you, it’s very easy to upload things to Vimeo that developers don’t want from you.
On Vimeo’s Terms and Conditions
Before proceeding further, please note that the guidelines for many video sites are different. Therefore, please read these guidelines and take appropriate action at your own risk. Unauthorized distribution of copyrighted material is illegal in the United States and many other countries. CBS Interactive does not encourage or tolerate the illegal reproduction or distribution of copyrighted material. Before copying or distributing content online, make sure you have the legal right to do so.
With this in mind, here are three tools you can use to download videos from almost any video sharing site.
Direct Download from Vimeo
Unlike most video services, some videos on Vimeo can be downloaded to a computer. If the option to download a video is available, you can click on the Download button under the video next to the Share button, as shown in the image below. After clicking on the Download button, a list of available formats appears. The most common video format available for download is SD.
Note: The download option is not available for all videos. Users must have a Business, Plus or Pro account for their videos to be uploaded by other users.
Using an online Video Converter
The easiest way to download videos from Vimeo is to use an online converter. You must be careful which one you choose because there is no guarantee for the quality of downloads and some types of these services may contain intrusive ads. Our favorite is OnlineVideoConverter, because it has a simple and easy to use interface. One thing you should keep in mind with OnlineVideoConverter is that if you use the Convert video link function to download your Vimeo video, the website can say that it calls itself YouTube Converter, but this conversion and video download tool will continue to work for Vimeo videos.
Once you have browsed the OnlineVideoConverter website, select the Convert video link option.
First locate the Vimeo video you want to download and copy its URL to your browser’s address bar. Once it is ready in your clipboard, go back to OnlineVideoConverter and paste it into the white text box labeled Paste Link Here, then select your preferred video format from the drop-down menu below. We recommend the MP4 format because it is the most universal format. Once you have selected your format, click on the yellow Start button.
I still can’t download a video.
If you do not get a preview as in our example after performing the above steps, make sure that the link you are using works by opening the page in a new window. Once the functionality has been verified, repeat the above steps. If the steps still do not work, try refreshing this page by pressing the F5 key on your keyboard, then follow the steps above again. If this still doesn’t work, you can try installing other utilities to download videos on Windows, Linux and Apple macOS computers.
