Some After Effects users have encountered the “Unspecified Drawing Error” error just before the program crash. Other affected users report that this error is only a warning for them, as they can continue using After Effects after closing the command line.

In fact, there are several reasons that can cause this particular bug in After Effects.

Clear the RAM (memory) cache

The first thing to do is to clear the RAM. This will delete all temporary cache files that are currently stored in your storage. To do this, go to Edit> Delete> All Storage. This will reset your RAM cache from scratch.

Clear the cache of your hard drive

You can also try to clear the hard disk cache. The fastest way to do this is to go to Edit> Clear> All Storage and Disk Cache. This will (obviously) clear your RAM and disk cache.

Rename the After Effects folder

It turns out that this error code can also appear in cases when your After Effects folder (in the documents) really has some corruptions. If this scenario is applicable, you can solve the problem by renaming the After Effects folder in “This Computer”> “Documents”> “Adobe”.

Renaming the After Effects folder with the extension “.old” essentially makes your operating system ignore this folder and create a new folder from scratch the next time you start the program. This will remove most of the undefined drawing errors from the damaged file in the After Effects folder.

Here is a quick guide to renaming the After Effects folder:

  • First make sure that After Effects and Adobe Creative Suite are completely closed.
  • Then open the explorer and navigate to the next location:
  • This computer> Documents> Adobe
  • When you are in the correct folder, right-click the After Effects folder and select “Rename” in the context menu.
  • When you rename the After Effects folder, just add the “.old” extension at the end of the name.
  • After adding the .old extension, restart After Effects and see if the problem is solved.

Change the RAM reserved for other applications

After Effects allows you to control the amount of RAM available for other applications. This is especially important when several applications are opened simultaneously. If you often use After Effects, I recommend to provide As much RAM as possible. Go to After Effects> Options> Memory… In the context menu change the amount of RAM reserved for other applications to less.

Disable or limit multiprocessor capability

Multiprocessor is a function designed to maximize the computing power of your computer. Although it was recently removed for CC 2015, it often causes several problems, including this one, in older versions of After Effects.

You can access the multiprocessor options by going to Settings> Storage and Multiprocessor.

There you can try to reduce the number of processor cores available. If that doesn’t help, you may need to completely disable multiprocessing. Your rendering time will suffer, but at least you can export what you need. Feel free to try it with other errors as multiprocessor has caused many problems in the past.

Allow access to Dynamic Link Manager through the firewall

Browse to folder C: \ Users \ \ AppData \ Roaming \ Adobe \ and right-click it to open the Properties menu. Select the “Security” tab and allow the current user “Full access” to the folder. Click “OK” and let’s go!

We cannot guarantee that these solutions will work in all cases, but we hope that they will save you time later. What are the most painful After Effects bugs you have encountered? Let us know in the comments below!
