If your tablet stops rotating automatically when you change orientation, use this guide to troubleshoot and correct the problem.

For tablets and convertible devices, Windows 10 can control the motion sensor to automatically rotate the desktop in landscape or portrait mode depending on the screen orientation.

However, sometimes the automatic rotation in desktop or tablet mode stops working for no apparent reason, or the rotation lock option is grayed out so that Windows 10 cannot automatically rotate the screen to the correct orientation.

Surface screen is not rotating

Make Sure That Surface Screen Rotation is Turned On

• Drag the slider at the right edge of the screen to the left to display the Charms menu.
• Tap on Settings.
• Tap on Screen (bottom right).
• Tap the Enable Auto Rotate icon (to release rotation) or the Disable Auto Rotate icon (to lock rotation).

Disconnect your Surface Cover and any external displays

The surface is designed to display the screen in landscape mode when you touch the Surface input cover or when your Surface is connected to an external display.

Disconnect the Surface input cover and any external displays to see if they prevent the screen from rotating automatically.

Check to see if the screen rotates automatically when you rotate the screen.

Turning the surface off and back on

1. Go to Start and select Power > Off.
2. Press the power button on your interface to turn it on again.
3. Log in to Windows and check whether the screen rotates automatically when you rotate the device.

Perform a Forced Restart

You should only use this solution if your Surface Pro has a black screen and does not respond or turn on. If the screen is frozen only on a particular display, you can simply hold down the power button for more than 15 seconds and your Pro will shut down and restart. Now, if it has the black screen of death, here’s what you should do:

• Press and hold the power button on your surface for 30 seconds, then release it.
• Simultaneously press and hold the Volume and Power buttons for at least 15 seconds, then release both. (The surface logo may be flashing on the screen, but continue to press and hold the buttons for at least 15 seconds).
• After releasing the buttons, wait 10 seconds.
• Press and release the power button to turn the surface back on. You should see the Surface logo.
