How to Fix Need Password Error Message in Outlook

It is frustrating to see that Outlook continues to ask for a password when it has been entered several times in the application. If the problem lasts longer, it can really drive you crazy because you have to enter the password every time you click on something in the application.

There are several reasons why it keeps asking you to enter your password. Your profile may be set up to authenticate you every time you send an email. Or maybe your profile has become corrupted and is causing the problem.

Either way, there are controls and fixes that you can use to try to correct the error in Outlook on your computer.

Make sure that the prompt for credentials in your profile is not checked.

  • Start Outlook
  • Select File | Account Settings | Account Settings
  • Select your Exchange account
  • When prompted, enter your password in the Password: text box.
  • Click on the “Change” button
  • Click the More Settings button
  • Choose the Security tab
  • Uncheck the box “Always ask for proof of identity”.
  • Click OK,
  • OK
  • Select Close
  • Restart Outlook.

Delete Stored Credentials from Credential Manager

You can solve the problem by deleting the credentials previously saved in Credential Manager:

  • In the control panel, click Credential Manager.
  • Locate the credential sets that have Outlook in their name.
  • Expand the set and click “Remove from Vault”.
  • Repeat the steps for all credential sets that have Outlook in their name.

Enable Remember Password

You may have forgotten to save your profile username and password so that Outlook will remember them every time you open it. This may be the reason why you are always asked for your Outlook password. Just follow the steps below:

  • Select “File” and then “Account Settings”.
  • Find the account under “E-Mail” and double-click on it.
  • Select “Remember Password” when the new window appears.

Start Outlook in Safe Mode and Disable the Add-in

You can start Outlook in Safe Mode, which is different from using Windows in Safe Mode. You must start the Outlook application in Safe Mode before this solution can work. There is a simple way to start Outlook in secure mode for all versions of Windows:

  • Hold down the “Ctrl” key on your keyboard when you click on the Outlook shortcut in the Start menu, on the desktop, on the startup screen or in the taskbar. Outlook will ask you to confirm if you want to start the program in Safe Mode. Simply click “Yes”.
  • Remove the add-ins in Outlook by following these steps:
  • Click on File > Options.
  • Select Add-ins. A pop-up window will appear showing all the add-ins you have installed so that you can manage them.
  • When you select the add-in you wish to disable, a small window will appear. From there, select “Remove” to deactivate the selected add-in.
  • Continue like this and try to launch Outlook after each deactivation. As soon as you no longer receive the error with the password prompt, you can stop disabling add-ins.
