On this page, we will discuss information about the cause and possible solutions of the blue screen of death related to startup (BSOD) with the error “UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME” and the stop code STOP: 0x000000ED. This error is sometimes written incorrectly as UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DRIVE, but it is functionally the same.
If you received a blue screen error or a shutdown code, your computer suddenly shut down to protect against data loss. A hardware device, its driver or associated software may cause this error.
Run CHKDSK /R from the recovery console.
If the computer cannot boot in safe mode (f8) and the Recovery Manager (f11) cannot boot, it may be possible to start the Windows Recovery Console and run the CHKDSK /R command to clear the initial Unmountable_Boot_Volume error. The following steps explain how to access a command window from the Recovery Console. When you open the command window under Windows XP, the instructions for using the control disk (CHKDSK /R) are identical.
Repair the Master Boot Record (MBR)
MBR is a type of information stored in the first sector of a hard disk. It identifies the position of the operating system on the hard disk, which helps to load it into the main memory (RAM) of a computer. By repairing the main boot record, you can correct the unmountable boot volume error.

Most of the causes of this driver error can be resolved by resetting a previous system configuration using System Restore.
Windows usually makes an explicit system restore point each time some drivers are installed, updated or deleted – this means that in 9 out of 10 cases, if the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error was caused by a change in the device drivers, a system restore point should be available to repair the damage.
System Restore, available from the Start/Repair/Restore console provided on the Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 installation DVDs, can be used to display a list of snapshots of your PC taken at different times in the recent past and to try to reset your PC to the selected recovery point. System Restore is “non-destructive” because it only affects Windows and programs, not your personal files and folders.
Perform Automatic repair
- Start your computer with a Windows 10 DVD or USB drive. If you do not have Windows 10 media, visit this page and follow the steps to create one.
- After booting with a DVD or USB device, select the “Repair Computer” option in the lower left corner.
- Select “Troubleshooting” >”Advanced Options” >”Automatic Repair” >”Next”.
- Select the operating system to repair.
- Be patient while the program tries to repair the files.
If none of these steps work, you may have a defective hard drive that needs to be replaced.
