How to Fix: Web Pages not Loading

Most of the time, we take the Internet for granted. So, if something goes wrong (like a Twitter crash or your boss decides to block Reddit at work), it can be a real shock.

But if your favorite website doesn’t load or if you continue to receive an error message, there’s no need to despair. If you have the same problems loading websites into any browser, here are some possible causes and ways to solve them.

Diagnose the problem

The first thing to do is to confirm if the site in question is below for all or only for you. There are a number of websites dedicated only for this purpose – try it for everyone or just for me. You can also search for the site name on Twitter or Reddit to see what comes out. If it’s really offline, people will probably complain about it elsewhere on the Internet.

Assuming that the problem is really only you, there are many different ways of knowing what is going on. First try using another browser or visiting the site in incognito mode. If this does not work, try temporarily disabling the security software to see if it is useful.

The security software blocks the connection.

Check to see if your Internet security software (including firewalls, antivirus programs, anti-spyware programs and others) is blocking your Internet connection. A personal firewall is a security program that monitors all connections from your computer to the Internet. It can be integrated into an Internet security suite or as a stand-alone program. Most personal firewalls deny Internet access to any program or a new version of a program unless you have explicitly authorized access.

Clear the DNS cache

Each web server connected to the Internet is assigned a number called an IP address. Domain names are assigned IP addresses through a DNS (Domain Name System) server. Your computer stores the latest IP address assignments so that you can connect to websites faster, but if there is a discrepancy between the DNS server and the IP address assignments on your computer, it can cause problems for any browser on your computer to find certain sites. To delete newly registered IP address mappings, clear your DNS cache.

Check other browsers

Open the website or websites that have problems with another browser. If the web page loads normally, it is very likely that you have a problem with your current browser. If the second browser cannot load the problematic website, check your antivirus or firewall settings. Some security software allows you to block certain types of content, such as images. In this case, not all browsers may be able to access the content, resulting in incorrect loading of web pages. If you determine whether web pages are loaded incorrectly in one or all browsers, you can limit your troubleshooting options.

Add-ons and hardware acceleration

If you detect only certain types of content display incorrectly, try repairing add-ons and hardware acceleration. Add-ons such as plug-ins or extensions are software that work independently of your web browser and can interfere with normal browsing. Hardware acceleration, a process that uses your graphics card to load websites faster, can also distort web pages. Try disabling hardware acceleration in your browser and revisit the site. Disable all third-party plug-ins, restart your browser and visit the problematic web page. If the page looks good, activate one plugin at a time and try the page again after activating each plugin.
