Windows, regardless of the version you have, automatically installs generic drivers for your system. Drivers are sometimes updated when you install Windows Updates. Sometimes you can manually update a driver, or a utility on your PC can do it for you. Driver updates are generally a good thing; they mean that your hardware manufacturer continues to actively add support for the latest operating system updates. Equipment that continues to receive updates will be compatible for longer. Unfortunately, device driver updates do not always work well with the latest version of the operating system or other hardware components. You may find that a driver update has broken something instead of improving it. In such a case, you must reset a driver to the previous version.
Windows has made it easy and pleasant to turn back a driver, which is a stroke of luck because it is usually one of the fastest ways to solve problems with a particular device.
The drivers are part of the software that controls some of the devices in your system. They are responsible for the proper functioning of the device, so they first check whether the device is not behaving correctly.
When to roll back a driver
- A user can report that a driver has become unstable or that a device no longer works properly after it has been updated.
- This can sometimes happen if there is a problem with the updated driver, or if another device driver conflicts with the one just updated.
The following describes how to roll back a driver in Windows 10.
You can restore the previous driver by using the rollback option.
- Open the Device Manager, click Start > Control Panel > Device Manager.
- Extension of the display adapter
- Double-click on your Intel® display device.
- Select the Driver tab
- Click on Roll Back Driver to restore the driver.
If the driver reset option is grayed out, one of the following options applies:
- There is no previous driver for this device installed on your computer.
- Your computer did not save the driver files of the original version installed.
Unfortunately, the Driver Roll Back function for printer drivers is not available as conveniently as it would be. Driver rollback is only available for hardware that is managed in the Device Manager.
In addition, Driver Roll Back allows you to reset a driver only once. In other words, Windows only keeps a copy of the last driver installed. No archive of all previously installed drivers for the device is saved.
If there is no driver that you can use, but you know that there is an earlier version that you want to install, simply update the driver with the old version. For more information, see Updating drivers in Windows if you need help.
