Apple Music’s web player is no longer in beta. The browser-based version, introduced by Apple last fall, is now available at music.apple.com. This makes Apple Music essentially platform independent. You no longer need iTunes or the Music application to play your Apple Music playlists. You can now connect to devices running Windows 10, Linux and Chrome OS.

The interface is similar to Apple’s new standalone music application, which the company will launch later this year with MacOS Catalina, except that it runs in a web browser. Apple says it should work in all browsers, including Google Chrome, and on all devices, including Windows 10, Chrome OS and even mobile platforms like Android.

The site provides access to the entire Apple Music catalogue, as well as all tracks that users have synched with their libraries that are not stored on Apple Music. Playlists – including Apple’s personalized “For You” recommendations – and Apple Music radio stations will also be available in the beta.

Benefits of the Apple Music Web Client

This step of putting their music on a web interface has made three very important things happen:

  • Apple introduced Apple’s music on other platforms without using expensive custom applications.
  • Apple Music’s biggest rival, Spotify, has had this advantage for years, now Apple Music is on par with them.
  • Waiting times for loyal Apple Music customers have been dramatically reduced.

Apple Music Playlists on Web Client

You can also create your own playlists, just like in iTunes. It’s very easy to set up and play. Here’s how it works:

  • Open your Chrome browser
  • Under the address bar, you will find links to websites you have saved or visited. If you’re new to Chrome, you’ll find suggestions of popular websites you can visit. At the far left of this area is a button called Apps with colored boxes (If you don’t see this button, right-click on the website suggestion bar and make sure “Show shortcuts to applications” is selected (checked). Click it.
  • On the page you are viewing, locate the “Web Store” option and click it.
  • You are now in the Chrome Web Store. In the search box where your cursor is already blinking invitingly, type “Apple Music Web Client” (you can type anything in lowercase if you want, this is for demonstration purposes only). Click “Enter”.
  • Chances are the option you’re looking for is at the top of the page. “The Music – the best Apple Music web client”. You can either click directly on the bold blue “Add to Chrome” button or click on the banner elsewhere to learn more about the application. On this page, you’ll learn essentially all the features of this web client.
  • When you click on “Add to Chrome”, a small window opens to ask your permission before adding this extension. Click here on “Add an extension”. Your download will start by itself and the extension will be installed automatically.
  • The music application is now visible as a small button near your Chrome address bar. To access it, simply click on it and it will open in a separate window.
