FaceTime video calls are a great way for distant families to convey a sense of belonging, but it’s a shame they’re so fleeting – the application doesn’t allow you to record the conversation to relive it in the future. Such a feature would not only be useful for special family occasions, it’s also a convenient and efficient way to create a podcast when you and your co-host can’t be in the same room at the same time.
Well, FaceTime doesn’t offer a burned screen recording, but there are other ways to do it. In this article, we’ll show you how to record a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
How to Record a FaceTime Call on your Mac
If you want to record a FaceTime call on your Mac, you can use the screen recording feature of QuickTime to your advantage.
- Open QuickTime on your Mac from the Dock or your Applications folder.
- Click File in the menu bar.
- Click New Screenshot.
- In the QuickTime window, click the arrow next to the Save button.
- Select Internal Microphone from the list of available microphones.
- Open FaceTime.
- In QuickTime, click the Record button.
- Click the screen to record the entire screen, or click and drag the FaceTime window to record FaceTime only.
- Start your FaceTime call.
- Click the “Stop Recording” button on the menu bar.
- Click File in the menu bar.
- Click Record.
- Give your recording a name.
- Select the location where you want to save your recording.
- Click Save.
Recording a FaceTime Call on iPhone
You can tap the “Screen Recorder” shortcut to start recording your iPhone screen. The 3-second countdown timer will appear before recording. Throughout the recording process, you will see the status bar at the top of your screen turn red. To stop the recording, simply tap the red status bar at the top and then tap the “Stop” button in the confirmation dialog box. You can also go to the control center and re-record on the recorder to stop recording.
Recording a FaceTime Call with Audio to iPhone
Voice recording is disabled by default. If you want to record a FaceTime call with audio on the iPhone, tap and hold the Control Center Screen Recorder button and turn on the microphone. Since it only records the sound from your phone’s microphone, you’ll need to increase or even maximize the phone’s volume.
Screen recordings are stored in the Photos application on your iPhone. It can be used not only to record FaceTime calls, but also for Skype calls, WhatsApp calls, etc.
Legalities of FaceTime Call Recording
Depending on where you live in the world, it may be illegal to record a video or voice call without notifying the other party. Because in some countries, this means nothing. But in some countries it may be illegal.
Many U.S. states have laws that require the consent of both parties, which means you can freely record calls if both parties agree. Some states do not require consent for recording calls, so make sure you are on the right side of the law when it comes to traveling. Other countries have different laws on call recording, so make sure you follow the laws wherever you are.
The law applies where you are at the time the conversation is recorded, not where you live. Your location at the time the conversation is recorded is a small but important legal difference.
It is good form to inform the other party that you are recording the conversation, even if the law does not require you to inform them of your intention to record the conversation.
