You probably have a lot of scripts and PowerShell modules that you use every day. These scripts perform a number of different actions. Remember the syntax used by a script to call this command, or, if you are unlucky, find out exactly what a script executed to stop this production server is almost impossible.

You could implement a kind of logging framework that writes various commands to a text file, but it would be easier to record all these commands. PowerShell transcripts allow this recording.

Start-Transcript

The Start-Transcript cmd let command allows you to create a record of all or part of a PowerShell session in a text file. The transcription contains all the commands the user enters and all the outputs that appear on the console.

Starting with Windows PowerShell 5.0, Start-Transcript includes the host name in the generated file name of all transcripts. This is particularly useful if logging is centralized in your organization. Files created with the Start-Transcript cmdlet contain random characters in the names to avoid any risk of overwriting or duplicating when two or more transcripts are launched simultaneously. It also prevents unauthorized discovery of transcripts stored in a central file share. Under Windows PowerShell 5.0, the Start-Transcript cmdlet also works under Windows PowerShell ISE.

How to record a command session in PowerShell

To create a transcription of each command you type into PowerShell in a particular console session, do the following:

Open Start.
If you are looking for PowerShell, click on the Top result to open the experience.

Type the following command to start saving the session to a text file, then press Enter :

Start Transcript -Path “C:\Folder\PATH\POWERSHELL_TRANSCRIPT_FILENAME.txt” -NoClobber

In the command, make sure that you update the text file with the location and name of the file you want to use. The -NoClobber switch prevents an existing record from being overwritten.

Once the steps are completed, you can continue to execute the commands normally, and in the background, PowerShell creates a transcription in a text file and saves it in the path you specified in the command.
