Media Creation Tool (MCT) for Windows 10 is a Windows 10 installation download program that can be created on the USB disk or generated as an ISO image.
MCT requires administrator access.
When Windows is logged in as a default user, Run as administrator or Run as different user with error 0x800704DDDDD-0x90016 fails to run MCT when it starts creating Windows Setup on USB disk or ISO image.
To resolve the error 0x800704DD-0x90016 that occurs when you upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10, apply the solution below.
Switch to the Windows 10 administrator account
It determines that the only way to upgrade to Windows 10 is to switch to the administrator account before upgrading.
Step 1: First log out of your current Windows account and log in using the Windows Admin account.
Step 2: After completing step 1, try using the media creation tool and Windows 10 ISO to switch to Windows 10.
If you do not have an administrator account on your PC, you can create one by using the process below:
Step 1: Open the command prompt by pressing the Windows key + the Run R dialog box opens. In this dialog box, type cmd, then press Enter.
Step 2: After opening the command prompt, type “net user administrator /active:yes” without double quotes and press Enter.
Step 3: You can also set a password for the administrator account, type “net user administrator *” without quotes, and press Enter. You should receive a password request, enter your desired password.
Once you have created an administrator account, you just need to access it. Once you switch to the administrator account, try again to run the upgrade process. We hope you will be able to upgrade your system to Windows 10 without error 0x800704DD-0x90016.
The error should not appear in the first place, because if you start the upgrade from a non-admin account, you will be prompted to enter the administrator password to run the multimedia creation tool. This brings you to the EULA screen anyway, but for some reason, the download doesn’t start and instead you see this error. It seems that you can only run the tool in the administrator account, which raises the question of why people were forced to update to Windows 10 via Windows Updates.
Disable third-party antivirus programs.
Antivirus programs are important for a system, especially if you are not a technical guru. Your job is to protect your system against malware, but they have their drawbacks. The most important thing would be that it intervenes in almost all the processes of the system and that an error occurs eventually. Be sure to disable or completely remove your antivirus software from your system before upgrading.
Enable hidden administrator account
If you do not want to create a new user account, you can activate the hidden administrator account at any time to install Windows 10. All versions of Windows have this hidden account, and you can switch to this account by doing the following:
- Launch the command prompt as administrator. The easiest way to do this is to press Windows + X and select Command prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin) from the menu.
- When the command prompt opens, run the net user administrator /active:yes command to activate the hidden account.
