Windows update error code 802460001 occurs when system files are corrupted. These files can damage your computer. The error may also occur if Windows does not install the latest update or if the user is unable to access the data. Virus attacks can also interrupt the update.
Run Windows Update Diagnostics and Troubleshooting
The first thing you can do if you have problems upgrading to the current version of Windows is to use the built-in diagnostic tool.
In light of the growing number of reports on various problems users are experiencing, Microsoft has since added the “Windows Update Troubleshooting” feature, which can help users solve problems related to Windows updates.
To use the Windows Update Troubleshooting feature, follow these steps:
- On your computer, press the Windows + R keys to open the “Run” command window.
- Then enter control.exe /microsoft.name.Troubleshooting and click OK.
- Then scroll to the “Troubleshooting” tab and click “Update Windows” to open the “Preferences” menu.
- Finally, click the “Run Troubleshooting” button and follow the on-screen instructions to start the scan.
Now that the scan is complete, click “Apply this fix” if the troubleshooter has found a viable solution to the problem. After applying the fix, try again to update the Windows operating system to make sure the error code 80246001 will still exist.
However, if the error code does appear when you try to update Windows, you can continue with the method described below to try to solve the problem.
Rename your software distribution backup folders
The Windows Update utility downloads new software updates to the Software Distribution folder. If the download process is interrupted, the files in the folder may be corrupted, so the next time you try to update your computer an error message will appear.
The Catroot2 folder is another folder that may contain corrupted files as a result of an interrupted update process.
It is also possible that malicious programs have corrupted some files in one of these folders.
You must rename these folders so that Windows can create new ones. After creating new folders, the utility starts downloading updates again.
Changing the registry editor
The next step is to clear the Windows Update boot path. These steps are for advanced users only! If you damage your computer with Regedit, you may lose your files! Be careful or use a professional tool to repair your computer.
- Hold down the Windows key and simultaneously press the “R” key.
- a new small window will appear.
- enter regedit in this new window and press Enter.
- in new windows you have navigation on the left. Use this to navigate
- when you find it, find WUServer and WIStatusServer in the right pane.
If they are not listed, we will not be able to clear the boot path. Otherwise, remove them both.
- Reboot the computer.
Scan and replace damaged system files.
System files are needed to run all processes on your computer, especially Windows Update. If any of these files are corrupted or lost, errors will occur. Error 80246001 may occur due to one or more problematic system files.
You may have unknowingly corrupted some of these files, perhaps your antivirus program overreacted and deleted them, or a malicious program may have deleted them.
To solve the problem you need to find and replace these corrupted or missing system files. To do this, use the System File Checker (SFC). SFC is a command line program that checks the protected system files for integrity violations. It fixes these disturbances by replacing the missing or corrupted files.
If you are using a Windows 10 device, you need to run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool for incoming mail before running SFC. DISM provides all files needed for repair.
Expert Tip: This repair tool scans the repositories and replaces corrupt or missing files if none of these methods have worked. It works well in most cases where the problem is due to system corruption. This tool will also optimize your system to maximize performance. It can be downloaded by Clicking Here
