Everyone who has ever used a computer has seen the clock in the taskbar, but did you know that you can customize the display? Instead of moving the mouse to see the day of the week, you can also set the clock to display by default.

You can also use this trick to do something stupid, like writing your name on the clock in the taskbar or leaving a funny joke message for your friends, but today we’re just going to show you how to make the clock more useful.

You should know that Windows uses this field in many other ways. So, if you type something strange into this field, it might accidentally be set as your date format in an outgoing email or something like that.

Set Taskbar Clock to Show Day of Week Using Control Panel

  • Press Win+X in Windows 8 to open the WinX menu. Select “Control Panel” and then “Region”.
  • In the “Region” window that appears on your computer screen, select the “Additional Settings” button.
  • Then, in the “Customize Format” window, select the “Date” tab.
  • Under “Short date”, add ddd at the beginning. That is, make the short date ddd.dd.d-MM-yy. In this case, only 3 alphabets will be displayed, namely Mon. If you want to display the whole day, i.e. Monday, use dd.dd-MM-yy. If you use a comma instead of a hyphen, a comma is displayed. Try to see if ddd, dd-MM-yy suits you. Set the day after the date using dd-MM-yyy, ddd if you want. By the way, if you want, you can also display the seconds in the Windows taskbar clock.
  • Play around and see what you like most. Click Apply / OK and quit.

In the new format, the notations have the following meaning.

dddd=day of the week (i.e. day of the week); M=month; MM=displays leading zero; d=day; dd=displays leading zero; y=year.
