Microsoft Security Basics
Q : What is Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)
A : MSE is Microsoft’s free antivirus program for Windows 7, Vista & XP users. It was developed specifically for individual PC use in the smallest space to provide complete protection against malware and will include new protection technology as part of Microsoft’s antimalware engine, the Dynamic Signature Service (DSS).
Q : Where can I download Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)
A : You can download it from Microsoft. It is now available around October 18, 2010 and is also available via Windows Update.
Q : How is MSE different from Windows Defender? 12)
A : Windows Defender only detects and removes spyware. MSE is designed to protect against the full range of malware, and in particular prevents viruses, rootkits, worms, Trojans and other malware from infecting your computer. MSE is an excellent set of Windows Defender.
Q : Is MSE intended to replace Windows Defender and Windows Firewall
A : No, but when you run Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. MSE disables Windows Defender to manage real-time PC protection. You do not need to manually disable Windows Defender.
MSE does not contain a firewall. But it works with your Windows firewall to protect your PC.
Q: How do I send a bug report for MSE to Microsoft? A: Bug reports can be submitted via the Microsoft Connect for Microsoft Security Essentials Web site.
Q: Should I remove other antivirus programs before installing MSE? A: Yes, you must remove your other antivirus programs from memory before installing Microsoft Security Essentials. An antivirus application residing in memory is an application that starts when you turn on your computer and stays on until you turn off your computer.
Q: How do I create a Security Essentials support log file?
A : MSE contains a small utility that you can use to create a support log.
Under Windows 7 / Vista, open cmd as administrator.
Type cd %program files%Microsoft Security Essentials.
Type MpCmdRun.exe -getfiles.
The application runs for 5 minutes and creates a zipped file named MPSupportFiles.cab.
This is automatically saved in the %ProgramData%MicrosoftMicrosoftMicrosoftMicrosoft AntimalwareSupport folder.
Attach the zipped file to your bug report.

A : 1.0 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, 800×600 VGA, 140 MB disk space.

A : MSE RTM is planned for the second half of 2009 in 10 languages and in the following 20 markets : Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States and United States.
