Malwarebytes offers a variety of amazing protection features in all its security tools. Its main suite, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, is currently one of the most popular anti-malware solutions on the market. However, some users have had difficulty launching and accessing the tool because malicious bytes cannot be opened for some of them.
Anti-Malware MalwareBytes and other legitimate or trusted antivirus and anti-malware programs will not work if the computer is infected with malware targeting the scanner and antimalware suppressor. This situation occurs when malicious processes actively execute and are programmed to prevent the execution or loading of certain other specific applications. Some malware programs not only prevent the application from starting MalwareBytes, but also remove the mbam.exe executable. To solve this problem, follow these steps to run MalwareBytes and scan the computer.
How to Fix Malwarebytes Not Opening on Windows:
Using Chameleon Malwarebytes
- Download Malwarebytes Chameleon. You can download it from the link below. https://www.malwarebytes.com/chameleon/
- Once the download is complete, unzip the program into a folder in the location you selected.
- Then open the SHM Helo file provided and follow the instructions.
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
If Malwarebytes does not open after following the instructions above. The user therefore tries to open the malicious bytes in safe mode. As you can understand, the main point is to open and run the Malwarebytes antimalware program once. The scan starts and finds the infected application in the background. In secure startup mode, many third-party applications do not work, so there is a good chance that Malwarebytes will not open the problem in secure startup mode.
Rename mbam.exe to explorer.exe
Let’s start with a workaround solution that we found in the official forum. Some users have succeeded in having the executable renamed by the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Suite. There is a high probability that its execution will be prevented by a malicious presence.
You need administrator rights to rename this file. And once you have successfully launched Malwarebytes, run an analysis and get the default name of the executable file. It should work now.
Here is the whole procedure in a few steps:
- Navigate to C:Program FilesMalwarebytesAnti-Malware.
- Right-click on mbam.exe and select Rename from the context menu.
- Rename mbam.exe to explore.exe and run it.
Running a clean Malwarebytes installation
Many users have said that reinstalling Malwarebytes from scratch has definitely solved their problem, and this is something you should try as the safest and longest method. However, if you have purchased the Premium version of the tool, you will need to find a way to get your ID and activation key back.
- Type “regedit” in the search bar that you should be able to access after clicking on the Start menu or the Search button next to it. You can also use the Windows Key + R key combination, which opens the Run dialog box, where you can type “regedit” and click OK.
- Use one of the registry locations listed below to retrieve your ID and key, depending on your PC’s architecture:

- Once you have received your ID and key, you can proceed with the actual reinstallation. Follow the instructions carefully if you want to continue with your Premium version after uninstalling.
- Open MBAM >> My account and click on Disable. Go to Settings >> Advanced Settings and uncheck the box next to the “Enable self-protection module” option.
- Close MBAM and download the “mbam-clean.exe” tool from the Malwarebytes website (the download starts immediately when you click on the button). Close all open programs and temporarily disable all other security tools you have opened.
