I have often helped people in forums where they mentioned that their hard drive crashed and they lost all their data simply because they didn’t check the state of their hard drive – and they didn’t have backups either. We often clean the hard disk, but rarely the hard disk scans to make sure our hard disk is in good condition. It is essential that you keep an eye on the health of your hard drive.

In this article I will talk about an alternative freeware Chkdsk Windows Surface Scanner, like Macrorit Disk Scanner, which scans defective areas and creates a report for you. This program will not fix the wrong sector, but it will only find it for you.

Once you have downloaded it, run the installer to install it. When you open the application, you receive end-user approval. Accept it.

Then you will arrive at the main interface

You must first mount your hard disk. Click Mount to start the process

Then click Scan to start the hard disk scan.

What do these entries mean:

      • Block: This is the block number at which the reading error occurred.
      • Error : This is a standard error message returned during scanning
      • Relation : This column explains in simple words where the unreadable block is linked to all file systems found on the drive.

Repair bad hard disk sectors

Okay, you found a bad sector – so what now?

Well, the first thing you could do is backup your data because there is a good chance that your hard drive will soon crash. If your hard disk is still under warranty, then RMA. If not, the next thing to do is find a way to fix these bad sectors. There are programs that claim to fix a bad sector. Each hard disk manufacturer has its own hard disk diagnostic tools. Check your website and run a diagnosis just to be sure. I will recommend programs that could repair defective areas.

HDD Bad Sectors Repair is a good program to repair Maxtor hard disks. Then there is the Ultimate Boot CD – it has some hard disk repair programs. If you are willing to pay, then one of the most common paying applications is spinrites, which claims to repair bad sectors.

You can try to save the data and perform a low-level format. You could use KillDisk.

If nothing works, then hard disks are cheap enough for a few days now – think about replacing them.
