When you watch a movie, you may come across a scene where the dialogue is too calm but the action is too strong. Suddenly, the volume doubles, even if you have silently adjusted the volume. This may be due to the fact that some sound card drivers install their own proprietary audio controls, which can also affect the volume. So, if you haven’t plugged in the headphones, the sound level of the roommates can cause earthquakes at night. To avoid such unusual cases, you can download and install Sound Lock, a free software of 3 applications.

Sound Lock is a volume limiter for your PC running Windows Vista and above. Use the application to set a volume level. If the sound level exceeds this threshold during playback, Sound Lock detects it and reduces it to the level you have set.

In short, the program is capable of producing a smooth sound throughout playback by reducing the volume for you during noisy scenes. Once it is finished, the sound returns to a normal level so you can watch the movie continuously and without having to adjust the volume manually.

All you have to do is visit the home page, download and install Sound Lock. After installation, the application is located in the taskbar as an icon.

A simple right click on the icon opens the options to refine the program settings. For example, in the’Settings’ menu under’Filter Mode’, you can choose whether you want to filter the volume by channel or use the’Master Filter’ option. Sound Lock allows you to adjust the system volume up to 14 channels.

Other options under’Filter Mode’ like’Output Channels’ and’Output Device’ allow you to manually select channels and control output devices to apply predefined sound limits. If you have connected your computer to another speaker instead of the two normal speakers, you can apply the filters to the selected channels.

A simple left click on the icon in the taskbar opens the Sound Lock main interface so you can adjust the maximum volume by dragging the bar to the desired level and turning the application on or off.

Sound Lock is free and can be downloaded from the developer’s website. It is also compatible with Windows 8.
