Microsoft Edge happens to be the default browser provided with the Windows 10 package.

Turn off the Edge browser that runs in the background

The Microsoft Edge settings page includes an option that allows you to prevent continuous background execution.

• First open the Microsoft Edge browser, type “edge://settings/system” in the address bar and press Enter. On the settings page, set the button next to “Resume running applications in the background when Microsoft Edge is closed” to OFF.

That’s all you need to do. From now on, the Edge Browser will no longer run in the background. When you close the browser, it will close completely. Remember that you will not receive any notifications from websites you subscribe to.

Change the registry setting to disable background operation of the Edge Browser.

• If you cannot find it, create a new key or folder under Microsoft and name it MicrosoftEdge.
• Create another Main Key under MicrosoftEdge Key. Make sure that the path is exactly the same as below

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\MicrosoftEdge\Main

• If so, create a new 32-bit DWORD in the main folder with the name AllowPrelaunch.
• Double-click it to open it and set the value to 0 (zero).
• Click OK.
• This prevents Edge from going to the background.

Contrary to what some people think, keeping a browser service active in the background does not mean that the application is collecting data or enabling telemetry services, as such an approach is only necessary for applications that can operate without an active instance of the browser.
