Several users encountered a problem when Windows Explorer showed incorrect or incorrect use of the disk in the drive properties. This article explains how to solve this problem.

You will probably notice something strange about the amount of free space on your hard drive when you look closely. If you right-click on your C drive: in Windows, you will see a certain space called “used space” – in the next screenshot, the hard disk contains 279 GB of files.

However, if you select all the files on your disk C: : (including hidden files and Windows system files), right-click on them and select Properties, you will notice something strange. The space required by the files does not correspond to the space required on your hard disk. We have here files worth 272 GB on our drive C: – but Windows uses 279 GB of disk space. That’s a difference of about 7 GB – where did all those GB go?

3 The hard disk does not have full capacity.

Is your hard disk damaged if it displays the wrong capacity? Not really. There are a number of reasons why a hard disk would have less space than what is advertised. For example, a newly purchased 500 GB hard drive will only display 465 GB even if no data is available. Or some external hard drives and USB sticks can cause another capacity problem because the size of the free space is considerably reduced.

Looking at all the examples and excluding the fact that you have purchased a fake hard disk sold by these unscrupulous resellers, there are three reasons why you should understand the possibility why your hard disk shows the wrong size of all or only free space.

  1. Hidden recovery partition or files that take up a certain amount of disk space.
  2. A computer virus has consumed all the memory and intentionally shows less free hard disk space, especially 0 bytes in the hard disk partition.
  3. There is a lot of unallocated space on the entire disk partition.

It turns out that a frequent aggressor who is known to take up a lot of space, which does not appear in the Windows reporting program, is System Restore. It is not uncommon to investigate the use of System Restore just to discover that it takes on a large size on your hard disk. Some affected users reported that in their case, system recovery supported more than 250 GB of data.

One way to solve the problem quickly, if this scenario applies, is to simply remove all recovery points from your operating system disk. This process will result in the space previously blocked by the system restoration being freed up and made available for general use.

Delete the “Rogue” folder from the recycle bin.

It turns out that this particular problem can also be caused by a ‘rogue’ waste folder. It has been confirmed that this problem occurs under Windows 10 and Windows 7. If this scenario applies, you should be able to recover the missing free space by deleting the file $RECYCLE.BIN – this will force your operating system to create a new healthy file that does not require as much space.

The vast majority of users who could solve the problem by deleting the $RECYCLE.BIN file indicated that they could do so by using an increased prompt.
