We have already covered Mixxx on TWC. Now we are talking about VirtualDJ or VDJ, another free DJ software for Windows operating systems. VirtualDJ has better features and its home version is free. It is also available in several languages.

This is an audio mixing software developed by AtomixMP3 for home use. You can perform all the tasks you can on a real external DJ. It is available for Windows, Linux and Mac. VirtualDJ is the successor of AtomixMP3, but the development of AtomixMP3 has been stopped since the beginning of VirtualDJ. It is available free in the Home Edition, for commercial use you must pay and purchase the PRO Edition.

VirtualDJ offers video mixing and scratching. There is a new feature in VirtualDJ 6.x called NetSearch. It provides access to music and videos from the Internet. Media are broadcast directly into the application and do not need to be downloaded. Grooveshark has been NetSearch’s content provider since May 2010.

MusicGroups were also introduced in VirtualDJ 6. What MusicGroups does is collect track histories and publish them on virtualdj.com. You can create your own group or join any group. It’s like a social music network, because you can comment or subscribe to any group. MusicGroups is also a consultant in title mixing.

You can transmit your own mixed sets to the Internet via the integrated RadioServer; RadioServer publishes a link and plays your music on that server via the link. You can also send to a web radio running Shoutcast or Icecast Server. VirtualDJ Webradio has been running since 2005 and is called VirtualDJ Radio.

When we talk about the interface, it looks like a real DJ and supports vinyl emulation. Vinyl emulation allows users to play real DJ stuff like scratching, beatmatch and you get tiny turntables on the interface that give you the real DJ feeling. And all this with a simple mouse and keyboard.

VirtualDJ version 7.0 supports up to 99 decks, although you would never need them, 4 and 6 decks are preinstalled.

You can download VirtualDJ from its homepage.

UPDATE : The free version of Virtual DJ has NO webcasting, microphone support or vinyl emulation capabilities. Thanks Jim!
