Those of you who are considering upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP should read this article because it talks about available upgrade paths – what you can and cannot do.

Windows 8.1 upgrades are available on the Windows store and on an installation media. However, installation media is not available for Windows RT 8.1 upgrades. You must use the Windows store. Again, the volume license versions of Windows 8, Windows 8 Enterprise and Windows 8 Enterprise Evaluation cannot be updated from the Windows store. You must use the media to update these editions, says Microsoft.

If you switch from Windows store to Windows 8.1, you cannot change edits. Upgrading to another edition of Windows 8.1 is supported by media only. To install Windows 8.1 on PCs running Windows XP or Windows Vista, you must run Windows configuration by booting from the Windows 8.1 installation support. If you use the Windows Store to upgrade to Windows 8.1, here are the upgrade paths available: you can upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and keep your Windows settings, personal files, and applications.

  1. You can upgrade Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to Windows 8.1 Pro while retaining your Windows settings, personal files and applications.
  2. You can upgrade to Windows 8.1 Enterprise (volume license) from Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Windows 8 Enterprise and Windows 8.1 Pro.

Note that you will not be able to perform one installation or update in multiple languages and maintain your Windows settings, personal files or applications. You can only keep your personal files intact.

You can upgrade to Windows 8 and keep Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, and Windows 7 Home Premium settings, personal files, and applications. You can click on the image to see a larger version.

You can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro and keep Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate Editions settings, personal files, and applications,

You can upgrade to Windows 8 Enterprise (volume license) from Windows 7 Professional (volume license), Windows 7 Enterprise (volume license), and Windows 8 (volume license).

As in Windows 8.1, you cannot update or retain your Windows settings, personal files, or applications when you perform a multilingual installation. To do this, you must use the installation support of Windows 8, says Microsoft.
