Some users came to us after discovering the ccc.exe process in the Task Manager. As it seems to take up more and more PC resources, some users rightly wonder whether the process is real or whether they should delete it from their systems.

In general, CCC in ccc.exe stands for Catalyst Control Center. This process is linked to all drivers on your ATI graphics card. I mean, it’s part of the utilities that come with the drivers and adds features like customizing your display or configuring keyboard shortcuts for different display profiles.

It starts to consume more CPU when this program runs in the background or when a driver update is started. Now check with this item to confirm the same. In the event that it continuously uses more CPUs, it indicates that there may be a problem with the application of the program. Check to see if an update is available for that particular CCC application. If so, try updating it to see if it makes a difference.

The presence of the ccc.exe executable should not affect you if you have an ATI video card. However, you can be safer by checking the location of the ccc.exe utility. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and locate the ccc.exe executable file on the Process tab. Then right-click ccc.exe and select Open file location.

If the revealed location is in the ATI Technology program files, you can be sure that the process is legitimate and that you don’t have to deal with it.

However, if you do not have an ATI video card, or if the revealed location is different, it is probably an executable malicious file that is disguised as a legitimate process. If you discovered the executable file in C:/ Windows or C:/ Windows / System32, it is certainly a virus infection. One way to confirm this suspicion is to download the executable into malware analysis software.

If CCC.exe encounters a problem, an error message may appear on your screen. Some common error messages are:

  • CCC.exe no longer works.
  • CCC.exe encountered a problem.
  • Catalyst Control Center: The host application has detected an error and must be closed.

Error “ccc.exe does not work anymore”.

If you notice that ‘ccc.exe no longer works’, we recommend that you delete the AppData ATI folder.

  1. Make sure that you can see all hidden files and folders by pressing the Windows + R button and opening a runtime window. Type ‘control.exe folder’ and open the File Explorer options by pressing the Enter key.
  2. When you access the options in File Explorer, go to the View tab. Go to the advanced settings and under Hidden files and folders, select the thumbnail associated with Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
  3. Start the operating system drive (often C:) and open the ProgramData folder. In this folder, you should see an ITA folder that should be deleted and removed from the Recycle Bin.

After you have deleted the two previous restarts, log in to the administrator account to get a message that the ccc.exe process no longer works.

Stop CCC.exe temporarily

If the Catalyst Control Center is constantly causing problems, consider this more efficient way to stop the process when and where you need it, but only temporarily – until you restart your computer. To do this, simply follow the steps below:

  1. First, start on your computer with administrator privileges.
  2. Then right-click on the desktop and select New -> Shortcut.
  3. When the Create Shortcut applet is loaded, copy and paste the following taskkill /f /im ccc.exe file into the Item pane item type, and then click Next.
  4. On the next screen, type a name in the Name box for this shortcut, and then click Finish.
