Windows stores the last copied or cut item in a temporary storage area called a clipboard until you restart or disconnect your computer. If you copy or cut something else, the previous item is replaced by the new item. For privacy or security reasons, you may sometimes feel the need to delete the clipboard memory to prevent data theft from the clipboard.
If you want to delete your clipboard frequently, you can create a shortcut on the desktop to delete the clipboard or add an item to your desktop context menu.
Delete clipboard with shortcut
Right-click desktop and select New > Shortcut. In the Location field, enter the following:
%windir%System32cmd /c echo off | clip
Click Next and name the shortcut as Delete Clipboard. Click Finish.
In addition, right-click this new shortcut and select Properties. Here you can do the following three things if you wish:
- Give it a new appropriate icon with the Change button.
- Minimize running windows
- Give it a keyboard shortcut.
To remove the clipboard from the command line, open CMD.exe and run the following command :
echo from | clip
Add clipboard to context menu
Open registry editor and navigate to next key :
In the left pane, right click Shell and select New > button and name it Delete Clipboard.
Right-click the newly created Clear Clipboard button, select New > Key and name it Command.
In the right pane, double-click Default, select Change and, in the Value Data field, enter the following value data :
.exe /c echo from | clip
Click OK. Press F5 to update and exit the register.
You now see the entry Delete clipboard in the desktop context menu. You can use it to clear the cache.
You can also simply add Clear Clipboard or context menu using our Ultimate Windows Tweaker.
The Windows clipboard is very simple and does not offer many functions. As a result, many free alternatives such as ArchiveClipboard, Enhanced Clipboard Manager, CopyCat, Clipboardic, Orange Note, Ditto, Clipboard Magic, etc. are available on the Internet.
