The notification area or taskbar is located on the right side of the Windows taskbar. It displays icons of some programs currently active on your PC, as well as notifications, if any.

To remove an icon from the notification area, generally open the taskbar and properties of the Start menu > Appearance and Customization > Taskbar and Start menu. Under the Windows 8.1 Taskbar tab, click Customize. Here you can hide icons in the notification area that you do not want to see.

However, the symbols are only hidden but not removed. Often, even if you uninstall a program, the program icon will remain, even if it does not appear. Windows 7 or Windows Vista must not remove the uninstalled program icon from the Control Panel of the Notifications Panel.
