How to hide a drive in Windows 10/8/7

If you are a Windows user, you probably know how to hide or lock a folder or file containing confidential data. In general, we use file encryption software to perform these tasks. But, if you have many such folders and files, it’s not a good idea to lock every folder. A better option would be to move all those files and folders that you want to hide or that you don’t want others to know about on a hard drive of your PC. Then hide the entire hard drive so no one can see it.

This hidden drive is not displayed in Windows File Explorer, but is accessible from a command prompt or by entering the drive letter in the Explorer address bar. So, if someone uses your Windows PC, they don’t know that such a drive is in your PC and that your confidential data is safe. This is possible under Windows 10/8/7/Vista. I will guide you through the steps that must be followed in Windows 8.

Hiding a drive under Windows 10

There are four ways to hide a drive under Windows 10. This is done via disk management, group policies, Windows registry or the Disk Part in CMD command. We will see these options step by step so that you can implement the same to hide a drive in Windows 8.

If you want to hide a drive in Windows 8 using disk management, right-click My Computer and then click Manage.

In the Computer Management Console Open storage by double-clicking.

Now double-click Disk Management Snap-in.

The Disk Management Console opens and you can view all disks on your PC.

Select the drive you want to hide and right-click it. Select’Change letter and paths’ and click the Remove button.

When requesting confirmation, say’Yes’. Now you can no longer see the hidden hard drive in your workstation.

Hide group policy drive

Start gpedit.msc and navigate to the following parameters :

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/File Explorer

Double-click Hide these specified drives in My Computer and select Enabled.

From the drop-down menu, select the drive you want to hide.

This policy setting allows you to hide the drives specified in My Computer. This policy setting allows you to remove icons from selected My Computer and File Explorer hard drives. Also, letters from selected drives are not displayed in the Open by Default dialog box. If you enable this policy setting, select a player or combination of players from the drop-down list. This policy setting removes icons from the player. Users can still access drive content using other methods, such as mapping the path to a directory on the drive in the Network Drive dialog box, in the Run dialog box, or in a command window. In addition, this policy setting does not prevent users from using programs to access these players or their content. And this does not prevent users from using snap-in disk management to view and modify disk properties. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, all players will be displayed or select Do not restrict players from the drop-down list.

Save and exit.

Hide drive via Windows registry

This second way, we will use the NoDrives registry key to hide a drive in Windows 8. Since we are adding a key to the registry, I suggest that you save your Registration. As soon as it’s done, keep going!

Press Windows+R key, type regedit’ and press Enter. The registry editor console opens. Navigate to the next path,

Here we will create a new DWORD value, so right-click Explorer and select New -> DWORD value (32-bit) .

Enter the name under ‘NoDrives’ and double-click to edit properties. Now the console opens, where we have to enter values. Under Value data, select the drive you want to hide. Each drive letter has a unique value and the values are as follows:

A A : 1, B : 2, C : 4, D : 8, E : 16, F : 32, G : 64, H : 128, I : 256, J : 512, K : 1024, L : 2048, M : 4096, N : 8192, O : 16384, P : 32768, Q : 65536, R : 131072, S : 262144, T : 524288, U : 1048576, V : 2097152, W : 4194304, X : 8388608, Y : 16777216, Z : 33554432, All : 67108863

Select the appropriate value for the drive and enter this value in’Value Data’. For the ‘Basic’ section, select the ‘Decimal’ option. Since I want to hide, drive ‘G’, I enter the value’64’.

If you want to hide two drives, for example ‘E’ and’G’, you can enter a value like’80’ (E = 16 and G = 64) and hide both drives.

Restart your computer and hard drive now hidden. If you want to recover the drive, change the value to zero, or you can even delete the’NoDrives’ registry key.

Hide drive with CMD

1] Open a high prompt, type the disk part and press Enter.

2] Enter List Volume and press Enter.

You receive a message – The disc section has successfully deleted the drive letter or mount point

To view the hidden drive , perform steps 1, 2, 3 above.

Now enter Assign letter D and press Enter. The player is displayed in the Tag browser.
