If OneNote remains open when the PC goes into standby mode, OneNote creates an entry in the cache memory to prevent the user from losing data. This may prevent OneNote from opening properly when you exit Sleep Mode. In particular, OneNote searches for the cache user’s credentials, and there is none if they try to authenticate themselves, and if you continue to click on Enter Password, they will never connect.

This is one of the most annoying conditions in which your dear OneNote can find himself: The famous error “OneNote needs a password to synchronize this notebook”. Apparently, this is a real problem. This essentially makes your OneNote application essentially useless and has almost driven me crazy – especially since it happened to me on my Windows phone, making the scenario even more complex.

Back up your data

I realized late what was happening and lost some notes. Nothing wrong, but I don’t know anything about your case. Note that my solution does not keep the changes you have made to your device. So copy anything that is not synchronized with a temporary text file or Word document.

How can I fix OneNote if it keeps asking for a password?

  • Close OneNote.
  • Press “Start” to start the Start menu.
  • Use the Run command or the search engine.
  • Type “Credential Manager” and press Enter.
  • Select the Windows Identification Information tab.
  • Find all cached users in the list (They are usually called MicrosoftOffice11_Data: or
  • MicrosoftOffice12_Data:).
  • Press the arrow on the side of each of them and click on Delete.
  • Once the caches are removed, start OneNote and enter your password for your account. OneNote should now work normally and synchronize with your laptop.

Login with your OneNote Account Again

It turns out that, in most cases, the ‘Onenote needs a password to synchronize this notebook’ will occur due to a generic error that can easily be fixed by logging out and returning to the OneNote application. In most cases, this problem occurs after installing a major update of Windows 10.

But remember that this method should be considered as a workaround solution and not as the correct solution because it does not solve the underlying problem that caused the error message. In addition, some users reported that the problem was reported a few days after the initial application of the patch.

Deleting the account using the Credential Manager

Another situation where this problem persists even after the traditional logout is a scenario where Windows Credentials contains corrupted data that causes problems with your Microsoft account. In this case, you may have similar problems with Office applications other than OneNote.

If this scenario applies, you can solve this problem by accessing Credentials Manager from the classic control panel interface and deleting all generic credentials associated with your Microsoft account.
