Activating the S/MIME control

  • Start by registering with OWA.
  • After you have logged in, click on the Options button on the right.
  • A drop-down menu appears under Options.
  • From the drop-down menu, click Show All Options.
  • In the Options section, click Settings in the left pane.
  • A list of icons appears. Click on the S/MIME icon.
  • The Email Security header appears with a text paragraph. Click on the Download S/MIME control hyperlink link at the end of this text.

  • OWA will try to download the file owasmime.msi. Click on the Run button.
  • The owasmime.msi file will be downloaded and installed automatically. When the window disappears, refresh your web page or click on the Mail hyperlink.
  • When the page reloads, a yellow bar will appear at the top of your web page saying “This site wants to run the following add-on”. Right-click on this bar and a drop-down menu will appear.
  • In this drop-down menu, click on Run all websites in the add-on.
  • Internet Explorer opens a security warning window. Click on the Run button.

Install the S/MIME control.

  1. If you have not installed the S/MIME control and you receive an encrypted or digitally signed message, you will be prompted to install the control when you open the message. If you have not installed the S/MIME control, you can also create a new message and select additional options from the Advanced menu > Message Options and select Encrypt this message (S/MIME). You will then be prompted to install the S/MIME command.
  2. When prompted to run or save the file, select Run.
  3. You may be asked again to check whether you want to run the software. Select Run to continue the installation.

Add your OWA page to trusted sites and use the Compatibility view.

  • Open Internet Explorer by searching for it in the Start menu or by locating it on your PC, then click on the speed icon in the upper right corner to open the drop-down menu.
  • In the menu that opens, click on Internet Options and wait for the window to open.
  • Go to the Security tab and click Trusted Sites >> Sites. Insert the link to your OWA page and click on Add. Be sure to indicate the correct link.
  • After adding the website, make sure you have disabled the Server Verification Required (https) option for all websites in this area in the Websites section.
  • Then return to the Internet Explorer home page and click on the speed icon in the upper right corner to open the drop-down menu. In the menu that opens, click on Compatibility View Settings and wait for the window to open.
  • Under Add this website, insert the same link you inserted in the steps above and click on the Add button next to the field. Then click on the Close button.
  • Check if the problem persists.
