Now that physical disks are no longer in use, everything will be downloaded directly to your device from the Internet. Most of these downloads are done by the corresponding program. Sometimes they are presented as .bin files, which cannot be used immediately. To use them, you have to convert that BIN file to an ISO. Here’s how.

What is a .bin file?

A BIN file with a .bin suffix is a binary file. It is usually a raw byte to byte copy of a source file, such as a clone of a source disk or file. Every bit and every byte is in the same place as the original. For more complex programs and even some games, they can be downloaded as .bin files and then converted.

What is an ISO file?

An ISO file (often called an ISO image) is an archive file that contains an identical copy (or image) of data on an optical disc, such as a CD or DVD. They are often used for backing up optical media. Or to distribute large groups of files that you want to burn to an optical disc. This is a disc image that you can burn directly to a CD or DVD or use with a virtual drive such as Daemon Tools. It still contains binary data, but it can be formatted. To make it usable as bootable media, such as a DVD of games or programs, we need to convert BIN files to ISO files.

Although many people use ISO images to back up their optical disks. Today ISO images are mostly used to distribute large programs and operating systems. Because it allows all the files to be in one easily downloadable file. Users can then deploy the image or use it to burn an optical disc.

Converting BIN file to ISO via PowerISO

Most users are already familiar with PowerISO as a powerful image file processing tool. However, there are many features other than opening/editing an image file. One of the functions is to convert image files from one format to another. We will use this feature to convert BIN in PowerISO to ISO. However, when users use the free trial version, the conversion size is limited. To try it, follow these steps:

  • Open a browser and download the PowerISO application. Install it by following the installation instructions and opening it.
  • Click the Tools menu on the menu bar and select the Convert File Format option.
  • Now click the source file folder icon and add the BIN file you want to convert. Change the output file format to ISO and click OK to start the conversion.

Convert with CDBurnerXP

As the name suggests, CDBurnerXP has been around for quite some time. It’s basically a CD burning program that can burn DVDs and convert and burn a bin file to an ISO file. You don’t need to burn it to physical media. CDBurnerXP lets you create an ISO file and then use it virtually if you want.

It’s free to download, works well and is intuitive. All you have to do is select the source file to convert, select the output file, and then let the tool do its job. I use it whenever I need to convert files.

Convert files with WINISO

WinISO is a small, free program that simply converts .bin to .iso. Like CDBurnerXP, it is easy to use and requires a small download. It will install, set up as a file manager for these files, and then let you choose the source and destination file and format. You can convert and burn or just convert, it’s up to you.
