Handling a damaged card reader can be very devastating. Important information stored on your card readers may be lost if the card is damaged. Most people spend a lot of time repairing a damaged card reader or obtaining important information about it, but their efforts are ineffective.

 

 

Modify the Drive letter

Another applicable workaround solution for repairing damaged card readers is to change the letter of the card reader in Windows Explorer.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Connect your card reader to your computer.
2. Right-click on My Computer and choose Manage from the drop-down menu.
3. Click Disk Management on the left to load the Virtual Disk Service.
4. Right-click on the card reader and select “Change letters and reader paths”.
5. Click on the drive letter and then on “Edit”.
6. Select the letter “New” from the drop-down list, then click OK.

Try another USB port

Although it may sound strange, you are wasting your time trying several times to connect your SD card or flash drive to a single USB port on your computer. The port itself may be damaged or there may be a software problem. Try other USB ports if your USB stick or SD card is not recognized.

Reinstall the drivers.

Sometimes the drivers that operate your USB stick are damaged and your PC is not able to recognize the storage media. You can reinstall the drivers by following these simple steps:

1. Right-click on My Computer/Ce PC. Click on Manage.
2. Click Device Manager on the left side.
3. Double-click on Hard Drives in the list. Right-click on the name of your USB stick.
4. Click on Uninstall. Click on Ok.
5. Disconnect your storage media and restart your PC.
6. Reconnect the keyboard of your pen. Your PC will recognize it.

Recovering a damaged SD card with the CHKDSK command

Step 1: Insert the damaged SD card into your PC using a card reader.
Step 2: Click on the “Start” button, select the “Computer” option. Look for your SD card under “Devices with removable media” and note the letter of the corresponding reader.
Step 3: Click on the “Start” button, enter “cmd” in the search field.
Step 4: Right-click on “cmd.exe”, then select “Run as administrator”.
Step 5: In the newly opened command window, enter the command : chkdsk[sd card drive letter] : /f /r /x and press Enter.

Chkdsk starts by checking and correcting any errors on the damaged SD card and restoring the readable information.

Do not format if you want to restore files.

Now try to find another card reader. If you have inserted an SD card into the built-in slot of your laptop or PC and nothing happens, use another computer or USB card reader.

Sometimes it’s the reader’s fault, not the card’s. You can buy a USB SD card reader for only a few books or a few dollars that accepts both microSD and standard SD cards.
