Users running multimedia software on current versions of Windows may have encountered a strange event: The volume of their multimedia applications – Windows Media Player, iTunes, Plex, etc. – may be too high. – is automatically reduced when they run certain games or programs such as Skype. It can be incredibly frustrating, but it’s not a mistake. The Windows act that automatically reduces the volume of some applications is actually the operating system that tries to help you. This is why this is happening and how you can politely refuse Redmond’s help.
With the explosion of VoIP services over the past decade, Microsoft wanted to make the process of making and receiving digital calls under Windows simple and transparent. As part of this mission, the company has introduced a new feature in Windows 7 (and continues to do so in Windows 8) that attempts to detect when the user has made or received a digital call and automatically reduces or mutes the volume of other applications during the call.
Many users have asked us for help after noticing that their volume automatically decreases as they listen to Spotify. The vast majority of user reports we have identified on this problem occur under Windows 10. Some users have noticed that if they remain motionless without making any noise, the volume will return to normal after a few moments.
Disable sound improvements
Another way to try is to disable sound improvements. You can do this by clicking on the speaker icon in the taskbar and clicking on the device icon (speaker) on the open volume control. The open window has separate tabs for sound enhancement. If there are other tabs for Dolby or other things, try to disable them as well.
Checking Windows sound settings
Windows has the ability to decrease the volume when recording audio.
This is generally used for convergence, but other applications have been discovered to use this Windows setting.
To change this, proceed as follows, assuming you are on Windows.
Go to Control Panel, Sound
Go to the Communication tab page.
Here you will find a parameter that specifies
When Windows detects a communication activity:
- Mute the sound of all other sounds
- Reduce the volume of other sounds by 80%.
- Reduce the volume of other sounds by 50%.
- Doing nothing
By default, it is reduced to 80%. Change this to do nothing and it should solve your problem immediately.
Alternatively, you may have adjusted the microphone signal playback and have something like Smart Volume Normailzation or Smart Volume Management active that reduces the volume when a loud sound is played. If that were the case, it would happen everywhere and it would be more visible. I mention it here just in case.
Disable volume normalization
Some affected users indicated that the reason why their volume was automatically reduced was an integrated function called volume normalization. This function is designed to ensure that each song is played at the same volume, but some users have reported that the adjustment occurs a few seconds after the song starts, annoying some users.
If you don’t care about normalizing the volume, you should be able to solve the problem by disabling the function in the Spotify Settings menu. Here’s what you have to do:
- Open the Spotify UWP application and click the action button (three-point icon) in the upper left corner of the screen.
- In the new context menu that appears, go to Edit and click Settings (at the bottom of the context menu).
- When you access the Spotify Settings menu, scroll down to the Music Quality tab and uncheck the
- Normalize Volume button – Set the same volume for all tracks.
- Restart your Spotify application and see if the problem is solved.
