“The current owner cannot be displayed” is an error message that sometimes appears in the Owner box when users try to support a specific file or folder. This behavior can occur for several reasons, but this error is always related to the user account rights.
When users try to appropriate a file that displays “Current owner cannot be displayed” in the Owner field, the error “New owner cannot be set to Folder, access denied” appears. If the user tries to open a file or folder without the owner being displayed, the following error is displayed: “You have been denied permission to access this folder/file.
The denied access error is usually displayed if a particular folder has no permissions, if the folder is used by a program or if the folder is read-only. Generally, the error occurs when the System group or the Everyone group does not have all the privileges. However, there are other more targeted scenarios that trigger this behaviour.
Unable to display current owner
The causes can be multiple:
- The software used to lock folders can prevent permissions from changing.
- The file or folder for which you want to change permissions may be damaged.
- The administrator account may not have been activated.
Run Shared Folders Troubleshooter
- Before proceeding with more complex solutions, you can try running the shared folder manager as follows:
- Click the Start button and choose Settings > Updates and Security > Troubleshooting.
- Select and perform troubleshooting of the shared folder in the list.
- Restart the system when the work is finished.
Sometimes, by granting full access to a specific directory, you can correct the error Impossible to display the current owner. Follow these steps to achieve full control.
- Right-click on the file and select Properties.
- Click on the Security tab, then click on Advanced.
- Select the Authorizations tab, then click Add.
- Select Add a principal. Locate and double-click on Authenticated Users.
- Click on OK.
- Select the Total control check box in the Authorizations field and save your changes.
- Restart your PC.
