Peer-to-peer file sharing is a great way to upload files easily and quickly. The most widely used peer-to-peer application in the world is uTorrent.

With this simple and intuitive program, you can now download torrents and adjust everything you need, from prioritizing files to your preferred storage location or changing bandwidth. It’s free to use, it installs in the shortest time possible, and is as easy to use as possible. Not on Windows 10. Microsoft suddenly decided to take some permissions from uTorrent, and many users ran into the “Write to disk: access denied” error.

Because of this error, some users’ downloads were blocked or interrupted. While others were unable to start the download session at all.

Run uTorrent as an administrator.

To solve this problem, uTorrent should always run “as administrator” by default. But that is not all. You still have a step ahead of you.

  • Click the Windows button and enter uTorrent.
  • Right-click the icon and select “Open file location”.
  • Right-click the uTorrent icon in the open folder and browse to Properties.
  • Go to the “Compatibility” tab in the Properties, set “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and select “Windows XP Service Pack 3” from the drop-down menu.
  • Scroll down and select the “Run this program as administrator” checkbox.
  • In other words, make sure that you have everything as shown in the screenshot.
  • Now click Apply and OK and go back to the uTorrent icon. Right-click it again and select “Open file location”.

Run uTorrent in compatibility mode

  • Find the uTorrent.exe file, right-click on it, and select Properties again.
  • Click the “Compatibility” tab again.
  • Repeat the changes, as for the symbol, and save them.
  • You may think that making changes to an exe file is enough and you can skip the step to change the icon, but it turns out that we have to change both the exe file and the icon, since the application in Windows 10 ran differently.

Now double click on the uTorrent icon and you will see that everything is working now.

Disable the Read Only Download Folder property

If the first method does not work for you, it is possible that the error is due to the fact that the folder in which you upload the torrent has a read-only property. You should create a new folder and disable the read-only property to fix this error.

  • To create a new folder, right-click anywhere, point the mouse pointer at the “Create” option and select “Folder”.
  • After you create a folder, rename it as you want and right-click on it. Then open its properties by clicking “Properties”.
  • On the “General” tab, uncheck the “Read Only” checkbox (applies only to files in the folder).
  • Now click Apply, and then click OK. It may take a few seconds to apply the changes.
  • Now try to download torrent again and use this folder only as a download folder for uTorrent.

Download torrent again

Sometimes files may or may not be corrupted. Re-uploading may take some time, but it usually works.

Reinstall uTorrent and try again.

As a last resort, but it worked. If nothing works, do it. It will almost always work, and I used this method for you in this particular situation and it worked.

These steps are designed to help you solve the current problem. If you still can’t fix the “Write to disk: access denied” error in uTorrent, you need to reinstall the client and try again.

He has to do it. If you have any questions or suggestions, please wait for your message. The comments section is just below.
