It’s surprisingly easy to learn how to build a discord server. You can set up a server in minutes and the whole process is completely free.

How do I Create a Server on Discord?

Creating a Discord server is easy.

1. Click on the “+” button in the left column

Whether it’s the first, second or third server you set up, that’s where you need to be. Note that the “+” symbol may be hidden if you have multiple servers. Just scroll down the server column to see where the “+” is hidden.

The next window that appears will give you two options: “Create” or “Join”. We’re going to choose “Create”, so pretend “Join” doesn’t exist (don’t worry if it’s deleted).

2. Server information

Once you have chosen between door number one and door number two, you can enter the server name and change the server icon by searching for it in your files.

You can also change the region of the server by clicking “Change”. We currently have ten different regions to choose from and plan to add more in the future.

Preventing Abuse

For large dissonance servers, you need to take certain precautions when assigning roles and channels. For example, if you have created a private channel and a new role for it, but that role is under another role with “Manage Roles” enabled, the people in that role can give themselves the new private role and access your channel. There are many other such cases, so here are some guidelines you should follow:

• All channel specific roles should be above the highest administrative role.
• Custom colored roles placed above the administrator role give administrators the ability to create new administrators, since they are technically higher than the administrator role.
• “Manage Channels” also allows people to delete channels and delete all messages in the process. For this reason, you probably shouldn’t give this permission too often. The same is true for the administrator.
• In read-only channels, members can still add feedback with the emoji. As there is a whole alphabet of emoji, people can spell things in response to your posts. You cannot delete them. So, if you have a problem with the spelling of certain words, you can disable this feature under @any in the channel specific settings. You can also hover your mouse over the responses to see who put them there.
• If you have dishonest administrators, the “audit log” under server settings keeps track of all administrative actions, such as deleting messages or locking users. This allows you to track down the people causing problems and eliminate them.
• If you have a problem with foreign spam, you can set the level of Auto-Mod in the “Moderation” settings. New users must therefore check their email or be an active intermediate user before they can register.
